I had AT&T for years ... switched to Cricket last week. If I buy the AT&T Note 7, will it receive OTAs? I seem to remember them requiring an AT&T SIM for software updates. This seems like a ridiculous requirement. Can I use Kies?

You won't get OTAs unless you have an AT&T sim, nor can you use Kies. It's a requirement to sell your soul to AT&T

You can just remove your Cricket SIM card, connect to Wi-Fi, and pull down the OTA. You can also get the OTA via Samsung Smart Switch. I have Cricket and I use a variety of phones not from ATT or Cricket and that is what I do to get OTA's.

Smart Switch doesn't work on AT&T. There is no firmware on any website. There are no wifi updates. It is done via the AT&T mobile network which requires a valid sim. It is well locked down

OTA's do not work I have figured out. Tried to do one with an ATT LG G3 I bought for dirt cheap. Would not work until I put in a ATT prepaid SIM card. Then the OTA came down, rebooted and good to go.
