custom notification sound mix up?

i downloaded the "zedge" app and downloaded a custom notification sound. I have the notification sound set as my "default notification sound" and my "messages notification sound" but have email notifications on but set to silent. Except only the default tone plays when i get a text which i assume is considered a "message" and my custom tone plays every time i get an email. Is this a software issue, or is something wrong, or am i not understanding things properly and have things set wrong?
