I have a rooted Droid x that was working fine but now suddenly it will not work for custom ringtones. I have no installed any new apps that might cause it. I changed a file in the system that disabled the camera shutter but I changed it back to test it. I'm stumped. The stock ringtones work fine. Advise?

Do you have the ringers installed in SD/Media/Audio/Ringtones?

When you select a ringtone it becomes the default. Then you will need to select default as your tone.

Yes its in that folder. It was set and working before but now when I go to the ringtone setting for the phone it plays the default ringer (or basic ringer) for the file instead of the actual tone. Tried a reboot, no fly.

Usually a reboot does resolve issues like this, have you tried playing audio through player to verify the file isn't corrupted some how? Another option to try is download Ringo Lite and see if the file saves and plays correctly.

Also can you access sd card without issues through file browser, maybe phone is listing ringer but having issues accessing them on card, try plugging into pc and select charging only option to allow unit to access files without restrictions, I have had a similar issues and this didn't get corrected until I dismounted it as a mass storage.. Its worth a try..

I just tried to play music through the native app program...no fly. Its saying that the file type is not supported (mp3). That is what my ringtones are too....connection? I would think so. Ideas?

tonight i got a call, and my custom ringtone played. 10 minutes later, the same person called back, and this time a basic ringer played. I looked at her contact info, and it said "unknown ringtone" for her ringtone. If I try to change the ringtone, it shows the name of her custom ringtone, but it plays the basic tone instead. I rebooted the phone and it fixed it, but wtf! It never did this on 2.1.

Strange...I pulled the battery for about 5 minutes and turned it back on. Works fine now. Interesting. So anyone have this issue do the following...

SOLUTION: Pull the battery about for about 2-5 minutes. Power back on the device. Should be good.

Thank you to everyone that assisted me.

Since you are rooted, use Root Explorer and move your tones to /system/media/audio/ringtones
I've had no problems since I did this on mine. Except for the known audio crash bug.

This is the same problem I am experiencing with my Droid X 2.2 NOT rooted. I randomly lose my custom ringtones (using Ringo Lite) and my music files will randomly not play. It does seem to happen more frequently when using the default music player app but I have had it using Double Twist as well. The VZW and Motorola Tech's want me to do a Factory Re-set but I have read on several other forums that this does not do any good so I am not going through this hassle. Also, Motorola claims that they are aware of this. http://www.androidcentral.com/motorola-acknowledges-froyo-issues-droid-x
