Custom ROM questions for DROID.

Hey all, currently using Cyanogenmod 6.0.0 RC2 OC to 800 MHz, but things still seem fairly buggy and not at all what I'd hoped for performance-wise. I tried Bugless Beast 2.2 (0.4) but didn't care for that either. One of my biggest pet peeves is when scrolling between home screens or through the app drawer, having the animation get real juttery and choppy, it drives me insane and it does nothing for me when it comes to showing off apps to iphone users, they harp on that relentlessly : P

So, bottom line, is there any particular ROM that is nice, quick, and stable that's worth taking a look at? Or should I just wait for the official release of CM6 and hope it's a lot better than what it is now?

Also, in order to optimize my Droid for performance, what are some things I can do? I've overclocked it, have a task manager of sorts (System Panel), and a cache-clearer. I've been using ADW Launcher, and it probably doesn't HELP, although I think it's a little snappier than Launcher 2, yeah? Should I try OCing it to 900 or 1000? Installing all my apps on my SD card? Any feedback on these questions would be much appreciated!

TLDR version:
-Suggest a fast, stable (preferably Froyo) Droid ROM
-Tell me how to make my Droid as fast as (safely) possible
-Clarify what typically kills the performance when using custom ROMs (launchers, etc)

I think maybe you are hoping for the holy grail here with the droid. It is a great phone but it's not perfect. There's nothing you can do to make it perfect either. You can overclock it higher but you'll get random reboots probably and other oddities as the core gets too hot - you'll also get worse battery life. You could keep your phone bare and not download many apps, keeping available memory high and thus your phone would be snappier - again this is a compromise, who wants a fast phone that has nothing on it. You could try the myriads of new launchers or the stock launcher - each has its advantages and disadvantages, none are perfect. You can limit widgets on screen that may be slow to reload/repaint.

In general, your best bet for stability is not to use a custom rom and to stick with the tried and tested official stock. It might not be as cool or as fast in general, but it will be stable.

I would have to disagree with you about stock being the best bet with performance stability. Yes each rom may have their own bugs but so does stock. It all comes down which bugs you can tolerate the most. Speed wise alone stock is the worst choice in most cases. It is not optimized and jit is not enabled. Each phone will react differently with roms and that's why it is to subjective to give a clear recommendations for what rom will work the best for you.

yeah, most of the roms I've used are just as stable if not more so than stock. Yeah there are usually a couple little quirks but those are easily fixed. Decreased battery life is a common misconception if you have profiles set up correctly in SetCPU. I have yet to see any noticeable decrease in battery life for average use. As Brett said, not all droids are the same though and they'll respond differently to different roms and kernels. I'm sure there's a rooted/overclocked custom rom out there for everyone though if you're willing to look and play around.
