I have looked at the directions on installing a custom rom on my captivate. All the directions I see tell me that i have restore my stock firmware. Does this mean I am downgrading to 2.1 eclair. All the direction I find are for a captivate running on this software. Can someone please get me started in the right direction. I really want to try and flash a custom rom just want to make sure I am comfortable with the process before I start.

Is it Gingerbread (2.3.x), or Froyo ROM (2.2.x) that you're trying to install?

With GB ROMs you'll need to use Oding to load a stock version of GB (mostly to get the GB bootloaders)- if you're going to install a Froyo ROM then you'll want to flash to stock JF6 because it wipes the phone and 2.1 is an easier starting point to hack.

Do you have a specific ROM in mind?

Most ROMs usually have pretty detailed install instruction (or a link to a website) within the first post. If it doesn't have easy to understand and find install instructions, you should skip it. At least until you're more familiar.

I recommend (for the sake of learning) that you find a ROM you'd like, familiarize yourself with the install instructions and then post any specific questions on part(s) you may be unsure about.

It'd be difficult for me, or anyone else here, to tell you how to install something when you aren't sure what it is you want to install.

I will add, to touch on your original question, that you don't need to sweat going back to stock 2.1. If you want to go back to stock 2.2 for any reason, you can- fairly easily, too.
