That's a word that comes up a lot. While I know that Android prides itself on it, I love the Pixel for being "the iPhone of the Android world.”

If you have a Pixel and wish the customize it to no end, why not opt for a device from a different Android OEM?

Asking to start a discussion and gain some insight.

Bc despite if I customize my pixel or not still runs smoother/faster than other Android devices and I like getting my updates right away instead of waiting.

Because I like an Android phone that gets monthly security updates and Android platform updates as soon as it's released. If you don't care about updates (which is nothing wrong and individual preference), then your choice for phone opens up much more.

I've wondered about this type of topic, as well. I'm happy that Android offers so much choice and differences with devices, but sometimes I think people don't match up well with devices. Like if you want something "feature heavy" (credit to J Dubbs), I don't know why you'd ever buy a Pixel and then want it to be that way.

Don't get me wrong, people can buy and do as they please and more power to them. I just don't understand why you buy a device and then expect it to be something else and do things it doesn't do.

As I mention need on a previous post to me it's how regardless if I cuztomize my pixel still feels faster and smoother more consistent than other Android phones and the fast updates. I always opt in for the next version of the OS as soon as it's made available and only now Samsung I believe started pushing Android P as an example and I've been on Android P for like 8 months.

Also I tend to use the pixel Launcher leaving it all stock 95% of the time but once in a while I'll reinstall Nova launcher just to add an icon pack and change things up a bit, but a few days into it I find myself always going back to the stock pixel Launcher.

Ah, that's what it is. I personally try to use whatever launcher the phone I have defaults to. Before selling the Note 9, for example, I was using One UI beta. For the 6T, I use OxygenOS's launcher and of course, the Pixel launcher on this phone. The only app that I'm not using the Google version of is the browser which I'm using Samsung's Internet for the secret mode.

I hear you on that. I am more thinking about some users that, switch launchers, THEN add some oddball APK for some feature, THEN add 20 apps on top of all that ... I mean at some point, doesn't all that just say deep down they really just wanted a different device?

The other side of the coin ... Buying a Note 9 and never using the S-Pen and turning all the Samsung Experience features off. Like why buy that device?

Yeah those are some valid points as well. Also believe it or not I actually love this year's built quality of the pixel 3 and XL. Yes I do wish there was no notch, but sort of got used to it and doesn't bother me that much anymore. I used nacho notch to hide the notch for a while then gave the notch a chance and just sort of got used to it. Other than the notch I love the way the clearly white model looks.

That's one of the reasons I ultimately sold the Note. I loved it but I always know there's way more under the hood that I can't find that will impact how my device operates. So, it was back to a Pixel with the 6T now as my backup.... Which I've never needed (a backup device I mean).

I think why people download launchers and apk is that want to personalize their phones more to their liking. That's what andriod always been about.
Then some features other phones have you can add their apk or use their launcher to your phone so u dont have to go out buy that phone for the one feature u want, dont get me wrong sometimes it cant come to your device because compatibility issues but might be a workaround for it.

I like notch phones , just wish Google made it smaller its little big .

Agree with you.. that a slight shift with the device is a great thing. That's exactly what Android is about, both good and bad. Some of us are versed in the system and understand its capabilities, as well as it's issues, but that's not most people. Some do these things then cause issues with their devices and they have difficulty troubleshooting their issues.

Our forum is riddled with many posts where someone starts gettting into all these things on a device, hitting all kinda switches, all in dev mode, adding this and that, etc etc and don't understand how these things can trigger other issues. They blame the device " Pixel is acting this way...", "Pixel is messing up this thing..." when a lot of times is user error and trying to do too much.

It's like that old show "Pimp My Ride" .. Cool stuff to watch, but sometimes you can go to far with it all.

I liked that show , pimp your ride))
These are people coming from other devices that say pixel acting like this or isn't high specs on paper . Pixel is a andriod phone that's well polished that's not going to have every bell and whistle. You want close to bare andriod and fast updated phone with a camera that's excellent and new Google tech in it then that's a phone for you and if you dont you have other manufacturers that put higher specs more features and more settings you can adjust to your heart content or just slap a custom rom on your device and call it a day.

You know, it's tough ... Android is such a robust system, so different than iOS. The amount of choice and control is incredible. I wouldn't have it any other way. But man, it's that same strength that can be too much, almost a detriment for some users. Almost too many choces and too many decisions.

A user like you, understanding and experience with multiple devices, skins, launchers, etc etc, represents the best of the Android can be. But some people want to emulate that kind of navigation prowess and find themselves outside of their depth. I give iOS credit for its limitations and protecting some users from themselves in cases like that.

I think the Pixel works well the way you describe. It's a great "edited experience with choices". Like a perfect pizza. Couple of toppings is perfect for most people, but some want everything and the kitchen sink on their pie too. .. LOL!!

(and why do I feel ike you used to record Pimp My Ride, Stang??)

I actually think the 6T is the "Honda Accord/Hyundai Elantra" of Android right now. An absolute great middle of the road performer. Maybe not the the hottest girl in the room, but won't embarrass you in front of your family and might surprise you when you're alone. Lol!
