CWM advanced restore

I was trying to find details as to what exactly gets restored with this feature. I've been using mybackup root and titanium backup root to do ny restoring of apps and/or data. However recently I've been having problems with both of them restoring SMS/MMS. They have been restoring them with time stamps as if they were all written at the time of the restore instead of their true time stamps. I also am finding it tedious to configure at least a dozen apps each time I have to start from a clean slate. Now that I'm flashing the CM9 stuff I'm probably going to be starting with a clean slate (at least during alpha) frequently enough that I'm going to want to streamline the process of restoring things back to how they were. Basically time needed more like half hour give or take instead of several hours.

Thanks much

Advanced restore is a nice feature but I really haven't used it much.

You are better off using Titanium or My Backup Root to handle your swapping of data and apps when flashing ROMs.

Advanced restore will allow you to break up your restore like data only or full, boot (kernel) system etc... but to be honest I don't know how well I trust using CWM to do these things... I've done it a few times to restore data only or other options and its worked out but I still believe Titanium or My Backup Root handle these tasks much better since that is what they are designed to do.

Thanks for the info. I may be doing something wrong then when it comes to certain apps then. For instance I have not quite a dozen apps that I have to log in once after install that for whatever reason regardless of restoring data for those apps I have to log in. A handful of others restoring data doesn't restore the apps settings. So after the first couple times I wiped to a clean slate I sort of gave up and just put up with doing some stuff from scratch again. But now that I have so much stuff I'm loathing the idea of doing all but a few of my over 100 apps setup and whatnot all over again after wipes. Perhaps in the past I wasn't doing something right? Or I didn't restore something I was supposed to for these particular apps?

I can recommend SMS Backup & Restore to handle your texts.. It does an excellent job..

I'm not a big user of Titanium, but I used MyBackup "Pro" a few times a week if I'm flashing often. Never have any problems with my app & data restores using it, I never have to log back in everything picks up right where I left off... Dropbox, Photobucket, etc.. no problems.

I'll give that a try and see how it goes. I was mainly using mybackup as a redundancy to titanium and CWM as a fail safe. I'm flashing back to stock to flash stock EL30 to try and get working VVM for CM9, update modem etc and for a clean slate for CM9 alpha2. Will report back when done on how this go.

Mybackup worked fairly well. Upon initial inspection only two apps didn't recover from the restore. Kindle and twitter both asked me to enter my login info like it was my first time using them. It appears that I didn't have juicedefender installed during CM9 alpha1 so no backup to know if it could have restored it's settings. And last but not least system settings and trebuchet home screens weren't restored. Is there a way to get those restored?

I was using ADW EX up until CM9 and on CM7 it's backup and restore would not either properly backup or properly restore as I was having to manually do settings and home screens each time I wiped. I have CWM, mybackup, and titanium backups from CM9 alpha1 if any of those can be used to recover those things. Worse case I do a backup of CM9 aplha2 and CWM restore back to CM9 alpha1 to do whatever is needed to be able to restore system settings and home screens. I also didn't check if notification sounds restored correctly but I'm going to assume since I didn't have to setup those few apps after the restore that all is good there.

You can try the following using MyBackup

Backup>Data>Local>

Then it gives you options to backup system settings, sms/mms/android home, etc..

Selecting system settings appears to have worked for the system settings except the default ringer for calls a ringer I never used was selected. Android home didn't restore trebuchet's home screens though. So it must be different that whatever that particular thing in mybackup is designed to backup. Perhaps there is something in titanium backup I have overlooked I'll take a closer look at the list in it.

Ya thats a tough one Stone, keep playing around... If you hit on something be sure to let us know :)

Ok I found choosing restore data from the trebuchet item in titanium backup restored the home screens except for the widgets. Fortunately I only had a couple of widgets so that is a quick fix. Beats the hour of placing app icons into folders to categorize my apps. This leaves only one thing to solve getting VVM. I did a backup of it after flashing the EL30 stock rooted deodexed package but I think that was a mistake as after restoring it VVM force closes no matter what I try and do, after it loads, other than type in a recipient. I suspect this has to do with the deodex. I should probably try again from one that isn't deodexed.

Good job Stone... Keep hacking away at it..

It would be awesome to see a proper backup integrated into that launcher in the future, not only for you guys on CM9 but for everyone running ICS with that launcher across all the platforms.
