CWM giving me an error message

I unlocked and rooted my phone using the instructions given by dmmarck. Everything went off without a hitch =) However, now that I installed ClockworkMod from the play store and attempted to flash clockworkmod recovery, I am getting the following message: "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!" -- I am running a rooted Verizon Galaxy Nexus 4.04 - everything is the way it would be after root.

When I boot into recovery I get an android with a red exclamation point on his chest... I am attempting to get to the recovery and wipe everything and flash vicious 4.1.1 (which I have downloaded onto my device).

My guess is that I lost root, and after doing some reading I see that there is a su.zip file that I should try to flash?? I have this downloaded as well, but I wanted to come to my favorite forum and try to get a detailed walkthrough.

I would appreciate any help getting me to 4.1.1... Thanks! =(

The red chest android is stock recovery (press both volumes when you see it to get to stock recovery options).. So you just need to flash a custom one in fastboot. Check dmmarck's guides again.. I'd say you probably missed permanently flashing it by renaming the recovery-from-boot file in /system.. And hence missed flashing su (Superuser).

See if you can follow that and work around it.. I'm out now, but can help you better tomorrow if you're still having problems :)

Edit: I do have the superuser app installed -- Everything went perfect as far as I can tell using Dmmarck's guide. I did just try to update the su binary through the superuser app, at the point where it said it was attempting to gain root access, it said fail.

Thanks for replying 2defmouze, I booted into fastboot and then scrolled the volume buttons to recovery... the little red exclamation point came up again and I held both the volume up and down buttons but never got stock recovery options... it just stayed at that screen. I then attempted to depress the power button as well to no avail... Battery pulled and rebooted.

I'm confused as to what I need to do at this point. I believe that I need to flash a custom recovery, then wipe my phone cache/dalvik, and then flash my rom from SD card?

I know I'm getting ahead of myself, everything was going too easy all the way until I tried to flash CWM recovery though the cwm app...

No you're fine, don't panic, lol..

Yes you are unlocked and, I'm guessing, the rom you want is on your sd card. So you want to stick a recovery in your folder with your adb and fastboot files, and open a command prompt there, reboot into the bootloader, and type:
fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img
Obviously replacing nameofrecovery with the actual name. Alternatively I believe Wug's or the toolkit you used may be able to do this for you.

Going to attach clockwork touch recovery to this post in 2 secs and you can use that... If you have problems or are lost just let us know exactly what's wrong.. Might take me til tomorrow to be able to help you more thoroughly tho :)

EDIT: CWM Touch http://db.tt/SU55GI8d

Again, if you need a bit more help ill be around tomorrow or someone else may be able to take over here tonight..

I am so very appreciative of this help. I must be typing the command line wrong... this is what I am doing.

Sorry to make 2 posts... this is the configuration of the folder that I have adb in.

I did not use wug's toolkit. I'm not sure what I would do with a toolkit =( I just followed these instructions exactly as they appear on Dmmarck's walkthrough.

Oh ok.. Change the command to:
fasboot-windows..... Etc

If you get where I'm going, can't type it all out.. That's what you're fastboot file is named..

Install Wug's Toolkit and then use the "root + permanent" option if you ca.

Or, if you have fastboot already installed (the boot into fastboot is your bootloader, not "fastboot per se) we can walk you through that as well :).

You guys are great! I had to delete my last post as I didn't upload my screenshot properly.

So it looks like it accepted my .img file. am I ok now to try to flash my ROM from my SD card through recovery? being sure to wipe everything?

Didn't see a screenshot, but yes. Wipe EVERYTHING.

And be patient at the Google screen!

Sorry Dmmarck, I had to delete my post as my screen shot didn't upload. So the recovery img worked and i'm in clockworkmod right now! I have vicious 4.1.1 on my phones internal memory in a zip file that I would like to install. I have wiped cache, dalvik, wiped all user data and performed a backup of the boot image, recovery image and system. Should I be safe to install from zip and open up this bad larry?

Do this:

Since you wiped data, you're fine there. Also go to "Advanced" and wipe the dalvik cache. After that, go to "Mounts/System" and format system. THEN flash the rom :).

SUCCESS! thank you to the great community at AC! especially 2defmouze and Dmmarck.

You guys just took the uncertainty and general grumpiness out of my night and replaced it with a "buttery" smooth transition... (see what i did there)? Now that I have a good boot image and my new ROM i'm good to go!

Again thank you so much!
