D2 Global - 720P video capture

I haven't anyone else mention this but the D2 Global specs indicate that it can capture DVD D1 video which according to Wiki and several other sites is a 720 x 480 resolution. That sounds like 720P to me which if it is true (and Veizon says it is) would mean that this phone nows matches the Droid X for video capture. I wonder if the supposed lens change allowed them to upgrade to 720P. For me this is GREAT news. Here are the specs from Verizon & Motorola:

VZW:
DVD?D1 Video capture with easy upload to YouTube, slow?motion capture, fast motion capture and more.

Motorola:
VIDEO CAPTURE RATE
DVD quality (720x480p) up to 30 fps capture; up to 30 fps playback

Its kinda odd that no one has mentioned this before. Has anyone that has gotten their D2 tested out video capture and playback? Man it is getting REALLY hard for me to wait for the Merge since this phone seems like everything I want.

720 x 480p is 480 video capture, ie: DVD quality. Not 720p(high definition). Also, it has nothing to do with an upgraded lens, it was entirely Verizon's decision to curb the video recording capabilities of the D2 to create artificial balance in their lineup.

That's why the Milestone 2, which is the Droid 2 without Verizon's branding or radio is fully capable of 720p video capture. Even inferior 34xx series OMAP devices Moto sells to overseas markets are capable.

Gotcha. It looks like I got all excited about 720 x 480 for nothing. I wonder if Gingerbread willl enable 720P recording in D2 Global. I also wonder whether the Merge already does 720P. On a rooted D2G is there a ROM out there that enables 720P recording?

As already pointed out, the phone is by all accounts technically capable of it, but it's been dumbed down so to speak. I'd thought that maybe someone can get around it by writing a camcorder app but I guess if it were that easy it would be done by now. Luckily I myself never use the camcorder in my phone. I have a small full HD camcorder/camera (Sanyo HD1000) that I use for vacations and everything else. Sure would be nice though to have the option of using the phone should I ever happen to need it.

To be honest though I'm sure there must be some way around it... there always is. Just have to wait till someone clever enough tackles it.

The Merge does do 720p(I sound like a Verizon commercial). Although I wouldn't count on the quality being worthwhile if its anything like the G2.

Its possible that someone will pull the files from the Milestone 2 and either port, or rebuild what is needed to achieve hi res recording on the D2/D2G, or even the DPro.

Yeah that's just the thing, even if it claims 720p recording we all know it's going to pale in comparison to the 720p setting on a real camcorder. My Sanyo HD1000 does 720p even in 60 frames per second (not fields but real 60fps progressive). The phone will do it at a much much lower bitrate for one, then there's that tiny lens, then there's the CMOS size which is tiny, etc. So the picture quality will still pale in comparison. That's why I always use my real camcorder for everything that is important. Of course, having a camcorder in the phone is great for those moments when you don't have your camcorder with you, but for me personally as I've said I've never needed to quickly capture something. Though I'm sure I'll want the best capability when the day comes I spot a landed UFO with it's occupants snooping about in the woods :P
