Dark theme with my own wallpapers

I love the fact that when I choose a darker preset wallpaper on my Pixel XL that I get the dark themed menu. Does anyone know how I can get the dark themed menu with my own photos as a wallpaper?
I would love to be able to accomplish this with the stock launcher.

I wish that worked. I've got some great night time photos of the Castle at Disney World but it doesn't go to the dark themed.

Maybe Substratum ?

Personally I'm using substratum to theme mine but I'm on 7.1 and rooted. AFAIK with Oreo, stock unrooted users are able to use some of substratum's features as well.

Andromeda brings Substratum theming to unrooted Android 8.0 Oreo devices

This is one issue that's really pissing me off with 8.0

I want to have the dark theme but still use any wallpaper I please. Google needs to have it as a setting option or just keep the default dark theme
