With my old LG Revolution (pos) and my Tbolt, I was able to surf/ use data while on a phone call. With no wifi, and using VZW 3G. Now, with the Maxx, while on a call, on 3G,, I have no data.
What gives?

Verizon's 3G is CDMA, which doesn't allow voice and data at the same time--hence, AT&T's ads always pointing out that you can do it on their network, which is GSM. Theoretically, you should be able to use voice and data simultaneously on Verizon's 4G LTE network, but I have read that it depends on the phone. I can confirm that the Maxx does support simultaneous voice & data on 4G--just tested it out.

Are you in an area that has 4G? If not, then I'm afraid you're out of luck.

Both of the phones I had used a system called eHPRD or something to that effect. Apparently this allowed simultaneous data and voice on 3G.
I'm not a phone newb, and yes I did have voice and data simultaneously on 3G. I just wondered if the Maxx supported this as well.

The thunderbolt and the revolution are the only phones that could do that, I believe. I would do it on 3G on the bolt to shut up the at&t fanboi friends i have. But if your on 4G you can do both. I do it fairly often on the nexus.

Also the Rezound. Didn't know the Revolution could do that too.

I remember reading that HTC did something unique with the way they designed their phones that allowed simultaneous voice and data while on Verizon's 3G network. I think it had something to do with the computer chips they used in the phone - HTC splits the responsibility for voice and data between two chips where most OEMs combine those tasks on one chip.

I thought HTC used separate radios in order to do this.

Yes HTC devices that have this capability on 3g (called svdo) have 2 seperate radios. They way it was explained to me is one was a cdma radio and one is for data (1x, 3g, and lte) the way you can tell is under about phone on the thunderbolt and rezound there are 2 baseband numbers for the 2 radios.

Also would like to note that all phones on lte can do voice and data at the same time. And the phones that could do it on 3g is because itbwas a feature of the phone not the network (ehrpd or whatever its called is just for seamless switching between 3g and lte). I thought this was only possible with the thunderbolt and rezound. Hearing you can do it on the revolution is news to me.

The thunderbolt and revolution are the only ones that can do that because the phones have both a 3g data and voice antenna. Traditionally, cdma doesn't allowed voice and data at same time unless you have both antennas.

With the maxx, you have a 4g lte antenna and a 3g voice antenna.
