Dead Droid X - Battery Issue

Check this out:

I work for a Ford dealer and was demonstrating the Microsoft SYNC system...no biggie as I've been using SYNC since it came out. After making a phone call, I wanted to demonstrate the Bluetooth Audio Media Stream capability. When I switched the SYNC system over to Bluetooth Audio after completing the phone call, is when all hell broke loose.

The notification bar was displaying the phone was still "in-call" with the time counter running. I touched the red phone "end call" button next to the notification but it wouldn't end. I opened the phone app and it didn't show a call in-progress. I went back and forth a few times and to no avail.

The stock media app was running and playing a song but nothing was coming through the SYNC system as well as the phone's speaker.

So...since basically everything was locked up, I pulled the battery and waited a few minutes then re-installed the battery.

The X would not power on. I tried powering on a few more times and...nothing. I pulled the battery and tried again...nothing.

I then connected to the wall charger and I was able to get the phone to boot up...and received this message:

"Invalid Battery" please insert a valid Motorola Battery.

I tried a few more things - removing the battery and the SD card, replacing the battery and powering on...nothing. Removing the batter and the SD card, replacing the SD card and the battery, powering on...nothing. Connect to the wall charger, the device booted up.

I sent a text to a good friend who is in sales at a local corporate VZW store and apparently this is a known issue. He recommended I remove the battery and SD card, replace the battery, and power back on. I told him I tried that...no dice. Of course, they have no stock so it's not like I can go down there tomorrow and get a new device.

After this ridiculously long story, has anyone else had a similar issue? Obviously, this is a manufacturer defect and I should receive a replacement...when stock is available...I just wish I could get something sooner because I'm out a device until then...

Thanks for reading!

I have to say... in the past I've had ALOT of problems with my 2008 Ford Explorer Limited and the Microsoft Sync system. I understand my version of sync is a GEN 1 edition and that I should have expected to have some issues...

... having said that, I was expecting to have issues with sync and my Droid X... howerver, I was VERY Suprised and happy to say that it Sync' right up, downloaded my phone book and call logs... bluetooth was not an issue, sounds was great, AND... I can receive, listen to and send txt messages via the sync system as well... which I love..

So in summary, my Droid X and Microsoft Sync is working great... now if Ford can get their head and a$$ wired together with the transmission and shifting issues, I might get another Explorer... other wise, I'll be moving to an X5....

I have had ZERO problems with SYNC so I didn't expect anything to go wrong and I have been using SYNC with my X since July 15th with ZERO issues.

As far as Ford getting their "head and a$$ wired together", I would think that having 3 of the top 10 best selling vehicles as well as 3 Best in Class from JD Power would be plenty good enough for that. The Explorer is waaaaay past it's due for an update...trade for a 2011. ;-)

called VZW tech support, they tell me to go to the corporate store I bought it at and use my "Worry Free Guarantee."

my buddy that works at the store says I might have to *pay* for the replacement and then have the $$$ refunded when it comes in...WTF?!!?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here but I think the reason that they do that is because they'll be sending the replacement unit to you personally and you'll have the device that you own now still in your possession. So until you turn your old phone into them, you'll still have two DXs at the same time and it's just a deposit until you return your defective device.

But if your phone isn't able to be used at the time being, I'm pretty sure you can just give it to them at the time that they're ordering your replacement and there wouldn't be a fee.

I've never had to deal with that kind of situation so don't quote me here, just guessing.

what was your battery level when this happened?
I have noticed that if your battery gets low (in the yellow)
If you don't charge it you are asking for a headache.

@dvader- battery was at 60%

@avlfive- ya, that makes sense but if the X I have is completely dead, what's the difference?

Fortunately, I still have my BB Tour so maybe I can convince them to hang on to my defective X until the new one arrives and I'm not out a device.

Stay tuned....

Yeah, if you give them your defective X at that time, I don't think that you'd be charged, that wouldn't make any sense. That's nice that you at least have the Tour so you won't be stranded.

Good Luck!

I think you'll like the 2011 Explorer. It's built on the Taurus/Flex platform and if it's anything like my SHO, they have the transmission nailed. Plus you get the Manumatic mode for when you want to have some fun! :)

Oh, and Sync works better with my Droid X than it did with my iPhone.

@itguy09 - ya, I was loving Sync with the X...was working flawlessly and sounded better than than my blackberry.

I posted my issue on some other android forums as well...I would really love to avoid having to deal with getting a different device. Part of my was wishing that I would wake up and everything would be ok ;-)

How naive of me!

I guess I'll have to take a look at the 2011 Explorer then... I'm hoping that its still a 4x4 and not just AWD...and still has the height of the 2008. If so, I very well pick another one up.

As for the fun... I have my 700 RWHP "Terminator" Cobra convertible to provide plenty of fun and then some..lol.

You shouldn't have to pay out of pocket and get refunded... Normally they ship you the replacement phone and you have 10 days to get the broken phone back after you recieve the new one or they bill your account full retail..

Exactly, glad someone other than me thinks this is silly... Paying 200 or 300.00 for a device and then it need to be replaced due to defect why should the customer have to pay in advance if you have a account that they can charge price of device to if device isn't returned?

Not everyone has 300.00 that they can have sitting in limbo until the other phone gets back to carrier and then have to wait about a week for the credit to be processed back to card, its silly enough that you already have to wait 6 - 8 weeks for your rebate to return for device.

Why cant Verizon handle phone replacement like Sprint (I really don't like comparing companies but this is one thing I thought Sprint had setup well), the phone gets sent to store that serviced the device and when it arrives the broken device is being handed over to store and the customer gets new device..... And guess what, with no deposits needed.

Also this Brand New Device trade for a Refurbish is another issue I have if device is only a week old.. People are already reporting receiving devices that appear to be used previously and this is silly..

If that's been happening, that's just flat out bad business. It's certainly isn't the customers fault if they get a defective phone.

I just got back from Verizon because my x had been locking up and they are going to replace it. I asked how long it would be with them being out of stock and he said i would have a new phone in a couple of days and it is different than a retail packaged phone. Its just the phone itself. No battery or cords. He told me there would be a label to send the old one back and if i didn't sent it i would be charged 569. I never had to pay up front and the phone should be here tuesday. I know its not instant but its not weeks like i thought it would be.

@katrina2475 - the reason you are getting a phone with no battery or other accessories is because they are replacing the device you paid for *brand new* with a refurbished model. To me, I bought a brand new device 2 weeks ago, it's defective, and now I want another *brand new* device...no refurb's.

The rep I spoke to assured me it would be a new phone. I also just called in to double check and was told they don't even have any refurbished Xs because it is so new. I'm not concerned in the slightest. I have bigger things to worry about.

that's awesome news and gives me a better outlook on things...

I'm going to call VZW and request a new one sent to me.

I have to say that every rep I have dealt with has been awesome. I am so much happier with Verizon than I was with Sprint. Totally worth the extra money.
