Debating on Losing the iPhone and Getting a RAZR - Thoughts?

I'm currently using an iPhone, but I'm having serious "the grass is greener" thoughts right now. Don't get me wrong, I like my iPhone, but I don't LURVE it. It works pretty much flawlessly, and the screen is beautiful. But that's where much of my fun ends. I'm incredibly bored with it.

I had a Bionic for about a month, and while I grew to really like it, I couldn't get passed the screen, the terribly slow camera, and the fact that some of my apps became dead (as in, if you pressed on them, they did nothing) until I rebooted.

I know there are threads on bugs, etc., but I wanted to know if anyone had come from an iPhone to a RAZR and what they thought. Most of my questions come from the screen and the camera. The iPhone's screen is beautiful and the camera is pretty damn good, even if it's only 5MP. I'll also be buying it off of eBay, or another similar site, so I won't have the same return policy as if I bought it from VZW, so I don't want to get stuck in something I don't like or that has too many bugs.

I've used quite a few Android phones (DX, D3, INC2, Bionic), so I know what I'm doing for the most part. But if the screen is pixelated like the Bionic's and if the camera is slower than hell, then I'll probably wait it out for awhile. And especially so if there are tons of bugs that need fixed in a system update.

Thanks to anyone for their advice.

I have an iPhone, a Droid 2 Global, and my wife has a Droid X.

Of these the iPhone is far more polished but has the smallest screen and very few customization options. I too have seen the Android one's kill apps more often than the iPhone by far. I have more crashes and more frustration but these phones that I have were not designed with Gingerbread in mind and were OTA updated to it at the time I obtained them. I wish I had a Razr to give you a direct comparison but I don't.

I think the thing to remember is that if you buy yours at a reasonable price and don't overpay - you'll be able to turn it around and resell it if you don't like it.

I am quite biased, as I HATE iTunes with my whole heart. That being said....

14 year old daughter had her heart set on iPhone. Grandma gave money, so choice was hers. I wanted Android (no need for iTunes, and mp3 apps are awesome for Android music lovers...) Also, many free Android phones due to upgrade.

Took her to VZW store (as they have actual working models...) Compared screen of Razr to iPhone and Samsung Stratosphere. IPhone isn't as "bright". Colors on Androids were crisper, but iPhone had no glare. With Apple, you get what they give you. Nothing more nothing less. She liked the screen on the Androids.

As for camera? I love the camera on the iPhone. (Sis-in-law has one). My OG Droid is rooted, and no camera or camera apple comes close to the iPhone. Not anywhere as fast. My sister had DInc 2, daughter has Droid 2, cousin has TBolt and Revolution. None as fast as iPhone. Pictures are as clear, just not as fast.

Sound quality on all phones are the same. And since you are familiar with Android, you know how easy it is to copy "look" of iPhone, from icons to keyboard.

My daughter (an easily influenced but smart 14 year old) would never take MY advice. Her friend came to school with new iPhone. Complained that every nickle she made went to iTunes.

My daughter? Went to Radio Shack and got the Stratosphere (liked the keyboard as a bonus!) VZW wouldn't price match. Free at Radio Shack and Best Buy...

Just my opinion!

I went from an iphone 4 to a razr and i really like the razr. It gives you more options to customize it without having to jail break it or anything the battery isnt as good as the iphone but other things make up for it like 4g LTE and Thinness big screen and gorilla glass kvlar back i like it.:)

What do you think about the screen and camera when compared to the iPhone?

The screen on the iPhone is smaller but has a higher pixel count. You really notice the extra resolution.

The RAZR is larger, but because it is Super AMOLED, the contrast is far better. Blacks are actually black, not a washed out grey. The colours are more saturated.

Both phones are easily readable in bright sunlight.

It is much of a muchness. iPhone 4's display is better if you dislike any form of graininess in your image. RAZR is better if you like super punchy colours and deep blacks.

My boss, a Korean guy, swore by the iPhone. Whenever I tried to talk to him about Android he was like yeah, yeah, yeah (translation: sounds good but it's not an iPhone). His contract was up so he decided to do a little tinkering since he didn't have to worry about warranty. He put some kind of custom cover on it that required him to take the phone apart and reassemble it using different parts. He messed up something and his phone would frequently overheat and his wifi wouldn't work anymore. Luckily for him, he had a friend who worked for LG who has finished testing the LG Thrill (3D Android phone on AT&T). He was about to throw the phone in the trash, but after hearing about my boss' problems he gave the phone to him. Now, he swears by Android. I asked him would he get the next iPhone and he said that he would never get another iPhone again. He said that he underestimated Android when he had the iPhone and he wish that he had discovered Android sooner.

I owned a iPhone 3G, great phone but got boring. I live in the tech world & wanted the ability to fiddle, also iTunes was driving me crazy, backups would take forever & it was eating PC resources, particularly with the latest updates. Brought 2 Razr's for my wife & I, she liked the iPhone but she is slowly getting used to Android. Great experience so far, no technical issues, speed is unbelievable, LTE is good most places but some issues with 3g/4g reception at home. Greatest assets, large screen - old fart with bad eyes, weight & LTE speed - happy camper

I was in the exact same boat you are. I have had every iPhone and had recently upgraded to the 4s. For a while I had the original droid (several years ago) and hated it and swore off Android phones forever. Once the Razr came out, I decided to return the 4s and give it a shot. As of right now, I won't go back to Apple. I love the Razr, however; nothing is perfect.

Pro's of Razr: Screen size! I never thought I would like the larger phone because I carry my phone in my pocket, however; the Razr is very thin and I don't even notice it any more than the iPhone. This is probably the biggest plus for me personally. Much easier to read for me and surfing the web is a lot easier. Speed - It is very fast! 4g is great and there is no lag going from screen to screen. This is what I used to hate about my original droid, it would lag all of the time.

Con's of Razr: Battery - Make sure to have a charger everywhere you go. I could easily last a day or two on the iphone 4s, not on the Razr. I might be able to make it a day if I turn off 4g, bluetooth, email push, etc. I just don't like having to do this so I choose to have chargers everywhere. Not a big problem for me. The camera doesn't come close to the Iphone in low light, however; in good light I can't tell a difference in the photos and it's nice to view them on the large screen vs. the iphone's little screen.

To address some of your issues with the Bionic vs Razr: The camera is very fast. My wife has the Iphone 4s and comparing side by side, they are almost the same as far as speed. The screen of the Razr is beautiful. It might not be quite as good as the iPhone but with my eyes, it's 95% as good. The size makes up for the difference. Apps locking - I haven't experience this on the Razr. I've had the phone for 3 weeks now and have not had to reboot. With the original Droid, I had to reboot constantly. I have a lot of apps loaded and they all work perfectly, always! It is a much better experience than I previously had with Android. I wouldn't say the grass is any greener, just a different shade of green.

Overall, I'm very happy I switched. As I said, neither is perfect and it's really a personal preference. I don't think most people would regret either decision. I'm not a fanboy of either, just enjoying the change and all of the new stuff to explore.

Thanks for the thorough comparison. I'm not 100% sure what route I'm going yet. Ive been looking at Razrs and Rezounds on eBay to see what kind of prices I can get. I'm fully locked into contract until March of 2013, so I'll be buying off contract and need to find the best deal that I can. Like you, I'm no fanboy of either platform. I've just grown bored with the limitations of my iPhone. I like to tinker, but not jailbreak or root, and I'm getting really bored with the plain Jane box icons, with no other options. Even without rooting, there are a million more options on Android. I will find it definitely difficult to leave the screen, camera, and reliability of my iphone, but if I can come close with one of these Android phones, I'll be more than happy to switch.

Thanks again, and I look forward to some more responses.

I don't think you'll miss the iPhone too much if you get the RAZR. Especially since you don't love it.

I do like it, though. I've had ZERO issues since Day 1. I'm just bored with it. But it works flawlessly.

I can agree with you on this. I hated the iPhone design until they came out with the 4. But, after having the 4 awhile and then getting the 4s, I realized I was bored.

Apple needs a new design and they need to get a big boy screen size.

I agree 100% with you. So did you come from an iPhone to the Razr? What do you think of the switch? If you don't care to elaborate.

I was in the same boat. Had iPhone 4s but then tried the razr and fell in love. So far it was a great decision.

Thanks to everyone who posted. Found a ridiculous deal and went for it. Sold my iPhone and I couldn't be happier right now. This phone is badass!

I've had only Android phones. The OG Droid and now the RAZR. My wife has the iPhone. The difference to me is when I am on an iPhone I feel like I'm just using a techie gadget. On an Android phone I feel like I'm using a computer.

I also hate the tiny screen on the iPhone. 4.3" is a bit big, and I don't have small hands, but there aren't any top of the line 4.0" phones, and no way I was going to a 3.5" iPhone.

FWIW, when playing games my kids always choose my phone over my wife's iPhone.

edit - just noticed I'm a little late to the game. Congratulations on making the right choice. Not right because you chose Android, but because you are happy with your decision.

This is my 5th Android device, and I can easily say I finally found one that I like more than my Droid X, which was my first. In between there was an iPhone and some other android phones, but this thing is a beast. My iPhone bored me to death, as I stated above, and I couldn't take it anymore. Yeah it worked, but I wanted something that has some options. I would absolutely recommend an iPhone to people who don't want to mess with their phones and just have something that works; but if you want to be able to mess with it and have a HUGE assortment of options, go with the RAZR, or another suitable Android phone.

And to explain the deal I got, I bought the RAZR on eBay for $414.99, and it came with a car dock, screen protectors, a silicone case, and a leather Verizon holster. I sold my iPhone for $450.00 on eBay. After fees, I came up almost even. Pretty good deal, if I do say so myself!
