Debdroid on the Optimus, Plus Backtrack Repositories

Hi all,
I would like to start a prime thread for the topic of Debdroid on the Optimus.

For those who are unaware, the Optimus is capable of running Debian Linux in Android. This opens a massive amount of potential to our phones.

Pre-requisites for installing Debdroid on the Optimus include being rooted, and running a compatible Kernel. (Information on rooting and kernels can be found all over these forums.) (To my knowledge, CM7 and the Xionia kernel include more features for use with Debdroid than others.)

I got lost in the leetspeak. what exactly is the advantage of debian linux on android (in stupid terms please)?

Full desktop applications in a small package, specifically tools for penetration testing on networks. Its a novel idea but I don't think it would be practical. (Coming from a network security major). The processors are too slow to use rainbow tables or brute forcing...

Debdroid = expandability

The overall reasoning behind Debian Linux in Android is expandability. Simply, the ability to do more. That's what it's all about isn't it?

In regards to network penetration topics, very true that the Optimus phone itself, due to processor limitations does not make for the most logical choice of any actual brute-forcing. However, the possibility exists.

Furthermore, there is a wide array of tools available for network analysts and network penetration specialists aside from simply brute forcing a WEP or WPA password on a router.

Taking it a step further, Debdroid is capable of installing and running the complete Backtrack 4 repositories, as Backtrack is Debian based. There are some compatibility issues with a few programs that exist however. Hopefully this topic will grow interest, expand, and we can start working on them.

I had problems running ubuntu and debian on our phones. I got the same issue no matter what and couldn't figure it out. Even manually installing Bash didnt help.

Yes

It runs on top of (or through) Android, so both are active at the same time when running it.

thanks but i have one more question when it says run bash what does that mean and how would i do it

If your phone is rooted, and you have superuser installed,
in better terminal (or whatever terminal emulator you have on your phone), at the command line just type su then hit enter, for 'super user' privileges (super user will pop up to confirm allowing the program super user privileges), then type bash and hit enter. You'll be at the bash line.

I find it interesting that straight linux an be utilized on our phones, but my only issue is that at the end of the day, my phone is my phone, and my Ubuntu-native laptop is my main linux box....

I tried that but whenever i type bash and then hit enter it says "bash: not found"

the link to download debdroid didnt work anyone have another link i would really like to run this on my phone. Also does it install well on top of rodimusrom v1.2.3 that is my current rom I also have nandbackup images of picasticks and harmonia thanx.

It is possible something may be missing. Do you have BusyBox installed? If not, try that.
