I plan on installing a distro of linux on my computer. Problem is I am unsure of which one (I have Ubuntu on there right now). I would like to try another distro but would like some suggestions.
What are you looking to change? Ubuntu is designed to be user friendly with a lot of the graphical perks thrown in automatically. Debian is the base for Ubuntu. It tends to be slower to roll out releases and more stable, but it will take work to add some of the Ubuntu eye candy. You can also look into Kubuntu for something still pretty but just different, or Xubuntu which eschews some of the graphics in exchange for performance. These are all different flavors of Ubuntu.
Or you can go completely different with something like Gentoo (based on Slackware) or Fedora (from RedHat), but the learning curve may be a little higher since some commands change (no more apt-get, for example).
You can see this thread for some people who've mentioned which distro they're running and why, or this one for a nearly complete list of distros.
Yep. Ubuntu is built on debian. Ubuntu is great. I wouldn't consider changing a good thing. As much time as I've spent setting it up to do my android stuff. No way! Runs very smooth and cool on my machine... I dual boot to windows 7 only out of necessity. Some programs I have to use are not built for Ubuntu. Something I have to live with, but I rarely see the windows 7 boot screen! Ubuntu is that awesome.
