It did this on the 3 XL as well. I'll select action launcher, it's all gravy till I reboot then no default is selected so it goes back to the pixel launcher. 4 XL is acting the same way. Is there a fix? It's annoying

Hmm, works for me with Nova Launcher on my 3 XL. Can you test out another 3rd party launcher, just to see if it's specific to Action?

I've experienced the same thing with Nova launcher... After reboot I have to select Nova as default again as phone reverts too stock

I'd wonder if there's some app you installed that's causing this behavior, but unfortunately you can't use Safe Mode to narrow it down since you wouldn't be able to use the 3rd party launcher in Safe Mode either.:-\ Do you have any security or antivirus apps installed?

Pixel 2 here, I have 12 launchers installed (like the variety) and it used to do this with all of them. Hitting the home key again would fix it. However hasn’t done it since February update.

Pixel 2 here ... I only have 1 launcher. This still happens to me when I simply close out of an app I'm using, like a text, or reading Google News. I was hoping the January update would fix it, then the February update ... still happening!

Does your launcher come back if you press the home button? Also if you go into settings and look up default apps and your default home app does it show "none"? If so and you click it and reset it to the launcher you want then exit out it might stay fixed or you might have to do it a couple of times after which it would be okay until I rebooted the phone. That was my experience before it stopped doing it all together after the February update and worked perfectly. I agree it's kind of annoying but the easy fix was pressing the home key for me. And now as I said it works fine so no problem.

I haven't had any issues with mine since the March update as well. I still wish that recents menu was the same on Nova as it is on the Pixel Launcher.

I have had this issue with action launcher on my Pixel 3 but never with Nova.
