Defective Galaxy Nexus Screen

Hi-

I've had my amazing Galaxy Nexus since December 21st, and absolutely love it. The first day I had the phone, my wife notuiced what she called a scratch running across the screen at a random angle. Since I had just taken it out of the box, I knew that I hadn't caused it, and actually if you look at it **really** closely, as just the right angle- you can clearly see that it is not on the surface of the screen.

So- my question is- is there an easy way to back up the entire phone so I can exchange it for another one that does not have that defect? I'm completely new to Android, and was hoping there was a way to transfer all settings, data and apps to a new phone.

Thanks!

Google saves most everything. When you long onto your account you can redownload everything .

Just wipe it and return it.

To backup EVERYTHING you need to be rooted and have MyBackupPro or Titanium Backup. It's not easy.

Google will have all your contacts, apps etc... saved on their servers.

First of all- thank you for the replies.

Secondly- I have to say that I am ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY blown away with this device. My previous "smart"phone was a Blackberry Storm 9530, which I languished with for more than 2 years. I am the poster child for ICS adoptability. Anyone that says it's too complicated and too difficult to learn must still be wearing those shoes with velcro closures. It's simple, powerful, smooth, stable, and intuitive. It has advanced settings that you can delve into if you so desire, but those who might miss such settings need not know that they are there, because the device "just works".

My brother (a diehard Apple-everything fan) has been razzing me asking how much longer I'm going to suffer with that Sh!++y Blackberry Storm (it WAS awful) and give in to an iPhone- (a great device). He has no interest in even looking at this Galaxy Nexus. It might ruin the utopia he's created for himself.

I've said a few times that ICS is the perfect time for people to jump to Android. I went to Android with the Thunderbolt and now I have to unlearn some of the stuff that I learned on the Thunderbolt. It's not a huge deal as I'm good with new things and I'm an early adopter with most things anyway. However, ICS is perfect for the Android "newbie" (for lack of a better term) because of the layout and just the overall feel of the OS.

Just out of curiosity, where about would you say this scratch was, exactly? I had something similar, and while I didn't think to take a picture of it, I used Paint to make a white line on a generic pic of the Nexus to illustrate where mine occurred.

If it's in the same spot as mine, then I'll feel more comfortable knowing that it probably wasn't something I did.

Beware, though, when you contact Verizon about it, do NOT, under any circumstances, make the mistake of calling it a "crack". I called it that without thinking much about it, and it turned it into a huge headache of a situation. I'd even be wary of calling it a "scratch", to be honest.

MRW: Identical. The screen defect on mine is in the exact same place.

Clearly it is not a crack. I have been handling this thing like it's made out of egg shell, so it's not something I caused.

It is under the glass and extremely difficult to see unless you look at it with the display off and even then- you have to have just the right lighting and angle. I bought my phone at Costco, which gives you a 90-day exchange policy "for any reason". I'm just concerned about losing my paid and free apps I've downloaded so far, as well as videos and pictures. I have to plug this device into my PC to see if I can transfer photos and videos because I'm afraid I'll lose them when I clear the memory.

I wonder how many others have this same issue.

Wow, mine was extremely difficult to see without the right lighting/ angle, too. That's such a relief to know that it must really be a manufacturer defect. In my topic about it, I believe one or two people commented about having a similar line under their screen in roughly the same spot.

Don't worry about your paid apps; those will be connected to your Google account, and you'll be able to download them on a new device. The free apps, you'll probably have to make a note of which ones you have, because to the best of my knowledge, they don't show up under "My Apps" in the Market (so you'll have to search for them again to download them, rather than having a single long list of every app you've ever downloaded). Your pics and videos, yeah, you'll probably have to back up to your computer. There may also be an app that lets you back up those things, but many of them require root access; I wouldn't be surprised if there's one out there that doesn't require root, though.

Just curious, since this is my first time doing this:

Is there someplace I can look in my online gmail account to see what it has backed up from my Galaxy Nexus, so I know what will be restored when I have this phone replaced? I know emails contacts google music will all still be there. I want to make sure the apps that I purchased will come back without a problem.

Thanks again everyone for the help and for taking the time to explain probably basic stuff to this Android beginner.

TONY:)

Hm. Not sure. Maybe it's possible to do this on the Android Market website; I've never found a way to do it on there, but admittedly, I never looked too hard. Again, though, your paid ones should show up just fine, so long as you sign in with the same Google account.

Purchased apps will definitely be backed up. Heck the Verizon apps that were on my Thunderbolt that I didn't want were backed up. It took me a while to figure out how to get those to stop automatically downloading.

I have one app that I purchased and had some problems with, so I contacted the app designer for assistance. After a few days, we got it working, but he refunded me the cost of the app for my troubles (which was nice). I wonder if that app will still be backed up even though it was refunded...

I guess we'll see.

Thanks again!!

Because I was curious- I looked around my gmail account settings, and found that there is such thing as "Google Dashboard". It shows you all of the info that is backed up in the Google database for your Google account.

All or most of the apps I've downloaded (and all of the ones I've purchased) are there, so I am confident that they'll appear this evening when I (hopefully) have my replacement phone.

In my opinion, the harder I look, the better this OS, and hardware seem to work.

My screen has a similar line like in the picture posted. Starts a bit left from the top center of the screen and curves down a bit to the right edge. Never noticed it when I was in the store but saw it 2 days later. You have to look down at it from an extreme specific angle to even notice it. Since it doesn't effect any regular viewing on the screen, I ended up just shrugging it off.

I shrugged it off too, initially. Then a friend of mine saw it and convinced me to exchange it since you never know if it will gradually worsen or somehow fail over time. I paid the same money everyone else did. I might as well start this 2 year commitment with a perfect phone.

Costco is out of them right now so i'll have to wait at least a few weeks to do the exchange but the guy I spoke with at Wireless Advocates told me he sees the line too and exchanging it for another phone wouldn't be a problem.

As an aside, he also hinted that he thinks the Costco included accessory bundle may change when they get the next shipment in. Could they be including a dock? If so, it better be the 3-pin one. The bundle that they gave me with my current Galaxy Nexus was ultra lame...
