Delay because of No Top Tier Phone to be released In December?

Re: Delay because of No Top Tier Phone to be released In December

If Verizon top brass do not think this will be a huge selling phone then why not just release this the same day as the Razr or Rezound?

Because that would piss of Moto and HTC. No OEM wants their phone to share a launch day with another.

Well if it will sell so much better the OEM should not care. I think verizon will release the nexus without much fanfare and stick it in a corner and leave all the advertising for the razr and rezound which honestly is fine with me I don't care if they advertise it or not as long as I can get one.

HTC and Samsung shared a launch date for the Vivid and Skyrocket on November 6th. Dont be surprised to hear the release date this week and then the launch next week.

The Nexus has to come last for Verizon to move Razrs and Rezounds reliably. Once it becomes Android 2.3 vs 4, people who may not care a lick about the features of ICS otherwise will potentially avoid the stale version. Upgradable or not, 4 > 2.3, and the average consumer will definitely see that.

But to those who have no idea about ICS or GB won't necessarily think it is stale, especially if they upgraded or just got gb on their phones.

Customer: So what's the difference between these two phones?
VZW Sales: Well the GN runs the newest version of Android.

That will really be all it will take.

With how they are pushing the RAZR, more like...

Customer: So what's the difference between these two phones?
VZW Sales: The RAZR is the thinnest 4G phone ever! And it's bulletproof!

Yeah right I can see verizon pushing the razr and rezound more when people ask, well the razr has kevlar backing and is splash proof and the rezound comes with beats headphones.

They would be the stupidest people in the world if they tell people that. The fact that the Galaxy Nexus isn't much thicker than the Razr they'll have to come up with something better than just "It's the thinnest 4G phone out there." Honestly I don't think most people will notice the difference in thickness. They will see the larger screen of the Galaxy Nexus and they'll see the difference in the operating systems before they notice the thickness difference.

They will notice the difference and the lightness of it with such good build quality that moto phones are known to have. Agree though that the larger screen will most likely be a big selling point for most. They will see it and say this has a larger hd screen I'm going to get that one even if they don't know any better.

Wooo, one layer of kevlar that doesn't really do anything except look neat

Wooo, overhyped beats headphones that don't have good accoustic responsiveness and only reason people love them is because of their endorsements

I'll take current android upgrades over that any day, VIVA LA DEVPHONE

Besides the bulletproof part, I've overheard a VZW sales rep telling a customer exactly that, when they enquired about the GN.

Re: Delay because of No Top Tier Phone to be released In December

I don't really care about how thin a phone is. The Nexus will be fine for me. I actually prefer it not real thin because anything too thin is kind of awkward to hold for someone with bigger hands. I like to be able to hold the phone on its sides comfortably and know its secure. I rather them take a little bit more room (as far as thickness goes) and put better and better optics etc.

Re: Delay because of No Top Tier Phone to be released In December

My point to the OP was that I don't really think the theory of a delay is accurate, if there is a delay, and certainly not for the reason spelled out in the title. Verizon announced the Galaxy Nexus was coming to VZW on October 21st. They said it would be coming "later this year". To me, it will only be delayed once January 1st rolls around. Also, my previous point mentioning the contact at Verizon was that Verizon considers the RAZR and Rezound their top tier phones for December.

I also suspect that the in-store team will try to steer customers to the Rezound and RAZR with a couple of tactics like: The Motorola is better built, better reception, thinner, etc. They will lead customers to the Rezound that they think are interested in music. They are going to push Beats hard! I think they will also use some scare tactics to the uneducated and say that the ICS is brand new and some bugs will need to be ironed out. Of course if they only sell the GNex online, then the in-store teams will have an easier time convincing impulse buyers to get the Rezound and RAZR. I personally haven't heard anything about whether GNex will be sold in-stores or not, but I would be surprised. They would lose the ability to steer customers away from the GNex and to more profitable phones/accessories.

Ok conspiracy theorists.
What exactly is the sales reps incentive to push one $300 phone over another one the customer is leaning towards?

More profit for big red, bigger commission in their pocket... ?

More commission for them and more money for verizon off the phones that are loaded with bloatware.

Re: Delay because of No Top Tier Phone to be released In December

And that's where it breaks down. If someone here can confirm that Verizon is providing an incentive, maybe. The VZW store near my work didn't evn care enough to have either Razr working.

Absent a money or time-off incentive, the in-store scenario plays out like this.

I walk in with $300 to buy a phone
The sales rep wants to sell me whichever $300 phone his intuition tells him gets me to the register fastest.
The manager wants me to buy whichever $300 phone his current opinion tells him I will be least likely to return.

Most normal people(not on these sites) won't return a phone unless it has a ton of problems. They don't care about quick updates and all that they just want a phone that works, and these new phones would do that. I think it is more the reps are told what phones to push more and given a quota or something to sell x amount of that phone. I know when I would speak with reps they would always try and push a certain phone no matter if i told them I wanted something else or not.
