Deleted media reappear in Photos

Some trashed photos and videos reappeared in the Photos tab (leftmost tab) in the default Photos app. They have .trashed in their filename, indicating they are currently trashed. After I re-trashed these trashed files, without permanently deleting them, they soon reappeared in said tab again. This time, I both re-trashed and permanently deleted the files so hopefully they won't reappear.

Reported the issue to Google. Meanwhile, any idea why this happens and how to prevent it? Android 12.

Go to the Library tab, then Photos on Device. Are there any folders there besides Camera that are set to back up to the cloud?

Yes. But only some affected files were in one of those folders. The rest were in Downloads which isn't set to back up.

Hmm, I wonder if it's a glitch related to trashing photos in folders other than the usual Camera one.

These are the full photos, and not just thumbnails, right? How big are the files?

Yep these were full photos, no more than a few MB each.
