Deleting without opening emails

I haven't wanted to receive my large daily volume of email on my mobile phone, so I created a special mobile email account on one of my mail servers. That email address is known only to a few people and never receives spam.

However, I am about to leave on long trip, so last night I configured IMAP access to several of my regular email accounts at various domains so I will be able respond to business emails on my trip. Those accounts do receive some spam that usually is easy to identify merely from subject lines, so they can be safely deleted without exposure to the malware risk of opening them.

Overnight some spam was received and I was surprised to find that there is no obvious way to delete emails without opening them. Is that true or am I overlooking something? Given that spam is a common vector for Trojans, viruses and other malware it is difficult to believe anyone would write an email client that doesn't have a way to delete messages without viewing them, but that seems to be the case. I am overlooking something?

You didn't say what email client you were using. I am using the default HTC Sense email client (not Gmail) and I can simply select the message from the list (i.e. with a check-mark) and then I get a choice of Mark Read and Delete. Hit Delete and it's gone, without ever opening it. I have both my Gmail account and an IMAP account going to this cleint and use it configured to show "all accounts".

Admittedly, I don't remember being able to do this when I first got the phone. Possibly it was included in the MR1 or MR2 OTA updates, I dunno... I'm on MR2.

I wish there was a "Move" choice so I could move it to the Junk Folder without reading it to help my mail service identify junk email. But there is only Mark Read and Delete.

I am using the default HTC Sense email client and you are right, there is a checkbox that allows email deletion. I must need new glasses. I thought there had to be a way to do that, but I'll be darned if I could see it until you told me it was there!!!

Also the chances getting a virus on an android phone is very uncommon.

Viruses designed to infect PC's pose little if any risk under Android, but specialized exploits are possible and are apt to become more common as the market share grows.
