DESPERATELY Need help S3 s968c...doesn't recognize sim card...Root???

My previous phone decided to take a bath with me, and being that I am not exactly "loaded" and I live in the boonies, My husband gave me his old S3, which he used with tracfone. It will not display imei *#06#. And does not recognize ANY sim when I put it in. I use net10. the sim is good, called and checked. What should I do next? Also, does tracfone = Verizon???? Thanks in advance. Oh yeah, I am NOT a techie by ANY means . But I CAN follow simple instructions online. I think I am just overwhelmed with information right now, hopefully not the WRONG info
