I bought a rooted note 2, sgh-i317m, not knowing it was rooted until I tried to update when I got home. Got the "cant update decice modified " pop up. Anyway I can determine the original carrier so I can possibly revert back to stock form with the proper firmware?

Thanks for including the model number :)
It's the Telus Note 2
As far as getting the stock ROM, you can try xda-developers.com since sammobile and samsungpudates haven"t been very reliable as of late

Just out of curiosity how do you determine the original carrier by model number?

Each carrier has their own model and Google is your best friend :D

Ah crap. Sorry man. I just thought from my google search that this model number was a Canadian model in general. Is there any benefit to keeping this device rooted? I like the customizable features etc. but would just like to update as the current os is 4.1.2. Any way to mask the root so that popup doesnt show? Flash counter also reads 1...

No worries, took me a few minutes to find it too
Yeah, you can do a lot of things with root. You can install 4.3 custom ROMs, either TouchWiz based or stock Android-based. If you prefer stock android you can even get 4.4 if you like.
I personally wouldn't upgrade to the official 4.3 since there is no way back and a lot of people are having issues since the update.
Flash counter can always be reset if you're on anything prior to 4.3

Kit kat would be great, could you point me in the right direction? Currently the phone has twrp 2.4.4.0 does this need to be updated?

i followed the instructions here, How To Install Android 4.4 Kit-Kat On Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (All Versions). | TechBeasts, but to no avail. could not locate the file in twrp. i did update it through GOO, now running 2.6.??

Is the file on the internal storage or SD card? You might have to poke around a bit on different levels for it
What I do, is create a separate folder for ROMs and save it there. That way I can just open the SD card and the ROM folder to find it

good idea, thanks. Now that the phone is reset ill have to update TWRP again then Ill give it another go. Do I have to add it to the SD through the phone, or can i do it with the SD in my Laptop then put the SD in the phone?

Edit: TWRP is still on the updated version. Phew!

I put it on the SD card when it's in the PC, and then move the card onto the phone.
I don't use goo or ROM manager so I download everything onto my PC first

ok, so i did what you said, and created a seperate folder to put the .zip file in, I found it opened it in TWRP and the .zip is not visible inside, any thought??

OK, got it all to work. Now running KitKat 4.4.2 BUT, does not recognize a network. :(

Checked that APN is correct for your carrier?

The rom I installed said it was for Canadian sgh-i317m.

I've given up an am now doing a emergency recovery through kies 3.0. Hopefully it'll at least get the phone working for me. I'm still not 100% convinced that the model number indicates carrier. Upon further investigation I'm seeing rogers, bell, Telus and at&t selling this model note 2.

I'm assuming once fully recovered and in stock trim, the phone will be re-locked to its original carrier?

Just checked the Wiki page and the model belongs to Telus, Rogers, Bell and Telcel. AT&T had the model number without the M.
When you download the firmware, you have to select your carrier, so I'm not sure if it'll re-lock it to the original carrier

didnt download firmware. saw in the thread over in the rooting forum a guy said to do a emergency recovery. Did that and all is back to factory stock running official status 4.3 JB. Had some rogers account apps show up after the recovery so it looks to be a rogers phone. Havent put my virgin sim in yet. Just waiting for my apps to finish re-downloading. Next step will most likely be figuring out a cheap and easy way to unlock.
