Device storage

Why does my s2 say on the box that its 16 gig but it says device memory is 2 gigs?

Device memory in the Galaxy S2 (or any Samsung android handset) is referring to the built in device storage used to store applications. Another partition, labeled SD Card is the actual 16GB partition of the phone, with about 12GB of memory available for use. On CM or any other AOSP-based custom ROMs, boh storage unit show up as Internal Storage compared to TouchWiz, which names them both accordingly.

Welcome to the forums. The 16GB is storage space, while the 2GB is how much memory (RAM) it has. Although I thought the GS2 only had 1GB of memory, but could be wrong there.

The 2GB partition is the device memory, with only 1.9 GB of usable storage.

...and no, the Galaxy SII only has 1GB of RAM. (or to be more precise, about 768MB of RAM on Jelly Bean 4.1.2 and 788MB of RAM on certain Jelly Bean 4.2.2 ROMs.)

Wrong, the t989 comes with 2gb of ram, the system alone with data and all leaves u about 1.2gb, stock touchwiz base is almost 500mb, so u see how giving this device only 1gb of ram would be silly, out of the box it comes with 16gb storage, 2gb ram (about 1.2gb after system)

Do you have any LEGITIMATE proof that the Samsung Galaxy S2 line has 2GB's of RAM? If the system (In your statement, TouchWiz) requires so much memory, wouldn't there be more RAM available were an AOSP custom ROM to be installed, as the ROM folder only takes up about 150-200mb? With both TouchWiz and AOSP, the RAM available is still around 760-790mb.

Here's a screenshot of my T989 Storage setting. Note the difference between my 2GB (1.97GB) device memory and my 16GB (11.25GB) USB storage.
