Devil's advocate - Why did Sprint release the Evo before the epic?

I cant help but wonder how this all factors in sprint plans for world domination, see if you can follow my train of thought and let's find out:

I don't know if the decision to release the evo 4g before the epic was really due to the fact that perhaps this way they could drum up excitement over their 4g network before att hogged all of the spotlight with the iphone 4 or that they wanted to give the evo a fair shot before they pulled out the super AMOLED guns.

Having lived with the evo since launch I can tell you, the phone feels rushed all over. Its almost as if sprint yelled THIS HAS TO BE OUT BEFORE THE IPHONE. I have mine fully rooted and modded with all of the enhancements the community has offered me all to at least bring me closer to how the epic feels stock.

AN ADRENO? seriously??? no matter how much I tweak I cant even come close to replicating how smooth the epic is. Not only that the screen is absolutely gorgeous.

Now I might just be venting a bit my frustrations with the device, to be fair it was a quantum leap ahead of my old pre. But I cant help but feel that I have been cheated. Let me explain... I upgrade my phones once a year for many reasons:

1. To be as much up to date as possible
2. Paying the bill hurts less if you enjoy the ride more.
3. Cannot afford to do it sooner.
4. If done sooner the wife would kill me.

Ok... so back again to my rant. Why am I dangled this beautiful phone in front of my eyes just two months after I make this purchase?? I cant exchange it because its been more than 30days :( and I cant upgrade because I have to wait for next year to be able to do so.

Maybe im just being unfair/paranoid but this is the first year this has happened to me I have been doing this since the good old htc apache days!

In closing one final question. Do I go for it and risk my wife savagely beating me/nagging me to death and go for it or do I hold out and see what happens?

Thanks for listening.

The Galaxy S was announced the same day the Evo was.

I think the Evo was just earlier. I have an Evo also but I think that it's just awesome there's more Android out there and the Epic 4G/ Galaxy S is a great handset, just like your own phone.

Or just think when you get to upgrade two months before anyone with an Epic 4G does if that makes you feel better? Either way, it'll be ok!

Because, I honestly believe the Epic just wasn't ready and Sprint had to have a flagship device out to stop the bleeding.

Seeing as though you do an upgrade every year I am shocked to hear this is the first time this has happened to you? I upgrade every year as well and this always happens to me. I buy a phone and a couple months later something presumably better comes out.

I've come to the realization I can't keep chasing the next white hope of a awesome phone every time a new one is launched. The Evo is a wonderful phone, and just because the newest thing was just released doesn't make the Evo any less wonderful! So think of it this way next year when it's time to upgrade you'll be able buy whatever newest phone has been launched and others who bought the phone before that will feel cheated it's a never ending cycle!

You can sell the EVO on eBay for about $400 but I see the price of the epic retail for $700

The Evo was released first so that Sprint could have exclusivity with it.

Although all the Galaxy S phones aren't identical, they're close enough to where the carriers don't have any leverage with it against the others.

As far as being upset that a phone is released a few months later that you seem to like better, that's just how it works. Although in this case, the Evo and Epic are so close in capabilities that it's silly to be upset about it.

i would hold onto your evo. just imagine what cool phones will be out in a year. in about 6 months they will probably have phones with android 3.0 on them. thats just the way the system works.

Honestly, I think the Evo was just ready to be released earlier than the Epic was. If you look back to when the devices were announced (I forget what the event was called), the Evo was already pretty much in its final form. The Galaxy S was announced as well, but just the generic Galaxy S hardware and most the UI. The EPIC (or any other U.S. carrier variants for that matter) werent shown.

It wasn't so it could be exclusive...Sprint just is the only carrier with 4G.

The (htc) hero came out before the (samsung) moment also. I think it's just how it was released, no real reason to believe in ulterior motives.

Having lived with the evo since launch I can tell you, the phone feels rushed all over..
Like every smartphone? Even the Epic has five or six serious flaws that give it the rushed all over feel, not the least of which downgraded tw and no froyo.

The fact is all phones are rushed and all have flaws.

Two words: I PHONE

Not that I necessarily buy that Sprint chose to or even had the choice to release the Evo before the Epic....but assuming that, I'd say the Evo was the Iphone 4's most direct competitor for Android at the time it was released. Now, not so much.

ok, I agree with you guys on a couple of things and yes I haven't lived with the epic like I have with the evo so who knows, maybe after living equal times with them I could make a more informed decision and I get that this is how things go, however the thing is that I really honestly don't feel that warm cuddly feeling with the evo that I have had before.

Dont get me wrong the phone is great and all, I just feel I have had to tinker with it too much. In a way its good to have the freedome I have but think of it this way. Its like buying a Ferrari and the dealer later revealing it has no a/c, tires, radio, wipers, etc. Yes I can make it happen on my side but I really would have enjoyed it more if they came standard.

I cant begin to tell you how annoying the 30 fps cap is, not to mention poor 3d performance. The games are getting scaled down?!?! why? its supposed to be backwards.

even thou these things can get fixed by the community, game devs (gameloft, ea, etc.) can't make 50 versions of their games, The segregation has already been started Power VR vs Snapdragon Adreno. And no matter how good i get my graphics to performe the games texture etc will still be gimped down to standard levels. HTC knows this but seems not to care.

Dammit im ranting again sorry ppl. :p

i actually feel the opposite way. i am extremely happy with my evo running cyanogenmod 6. i have no fps issues. yes, there is some tinkering but i love my phone and have absolutely no regrets buying it....i paid retail of $450!

if it's bothering you this much you need to consider selling your phone while it is still a flagship device (have you SEEN how many commercials are on tv these days for evo?). you can get at least $400 or possibly more by selling it on craigslist or ebay. you can get the epic for $500.

That's the thing it bothers me to some extent but not enough to make me want to say a final goodbye to my evo. What really frustrates me more is the fact that im halfway on a decision. btw im running Damage Control 3.5 with King's BFS kernel 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and now 8 :p

I am happy with my evo, if any hardware felt rushed, it was the Pre. It had (and still has with what I'm seeing with the 2.0 SDK news) potential.

I think I'll stop into a Sprint store to at least play with the epic, but all in all, I think I will be happy with the evo till june.

I think this dead horse has pretty much been beaten... chasing technology like this is a never ending game and it costs a lot to stay in front of the wave and always have the new, hot device. Either be ready to pay a lot of money to be a beta tester or just be patient and wait six months for bugs to get sorted and price to come down. :-) At least it is a lot cheaper than upgrading computers every 6 months like a lot of us computer dorks used to do!!!

I would like to offer one other alternative:

Install the most recent CM6 nightly because it seems to be considerably faster than the most recent stable release. Then wait 6 months. The EVO and the EPIC will both be worth about 1/3 of what they are now and selling your EVO to pick up the EPIC will only be a $50 (or less) difference rather than $150. You are paying 10 times that per year in service, so why not shell out the extra dollars to have the piece of hardware that you enjoy the most to utilize all this data connectivity you are seeking, right? I paid $315 for my hero in january, and by march sprint was selling it for $69. This too will happen to the EVO not far from now when HTC rolls out their first dual core phone announcement in the fall...

im seeing some people here in the forums who are not too happy about the epic. Im going to have to make my way to my sprint store to play with one and see if this calms me down a bit.
