Did ANY of you get the 3G Hotspot to work, via VZW ?

I would post directions to the *not to mentioned* route but people have had their posts deleted by admins....if someone can explain to me why its against the rules, I would appreciate it...otherwise, I can't see how it different than rooting...

Because rooting is a grey area. Using an app for free to access a paid service for free, which you aren't paying for is illegal by all counts. WiFi tethering for root is merely accessing bandwidth you are using anyways. Once again a grey area. (And yes I don't need a lecture on how it's the same service I know)

If you are talking about the DUN editing, I did this and the mobile hotspot feature works perfectly fine on my incredible. The best thing about it is that it is an actual WiFi network and not an ad-hoc wifi network, so it allows me to share with other android devices and things that do not support ad-hoc connections but do have the WiFiz

Yes I've done it it works. However I felt safer using WiFi tether or pdanet because it uses a different method on tapping into your data connection which makes it appear as your android browser where the hotspot app doesn't do that.

Must you root for DUN editing to work?

No you don't need root it's a system editable property. Search it's around, but be careful using it nobody knows if it's tracked or not.

I'm curious as to why/when would someone need to do WiFi thetering. Why route a Wifi connection from your phone to your laptop (or computer) when you can just connect directly to the Wifi spot with both devices? I guess there is an obscure situation that I never thought off. ;)

On the other hand, if there is a spot where Wifi is not available I can definitely see a use to routing 3g internet from your phone to your computer. :D

I've got the hotspot working but I can only connect other mobile devices. Laptops just play sit and spin with some kind of authentication starting message. It did this for about 30 minutes y'day. Any ideas on what I should do? Or is this the curse I received from using the method which must not be named?

I guess you mean because of my "obscure reason I don't understand" statement. I still don't see the point of "Wifi thetering". LOL

When you don't have internet you can wirelessly tether to your phone for access. Like in a car, on a train, in a bus, on a plane, out in the woods, at work, when your internet is out, at the store, in a cafe, in the park.....I think you get the point. This isn't something you would do when you have network access via cable modem etc. But is perfect for someone with an iPad or Laptop and they are mobile. Especially when you are staying in a hotel that charges for internet service and you have a perfect signal on VZW. (Like every hotel in DC) You do understand what wireless tethering give you right? It's internet access......

I guess I was just trying to clarified someones comment by using the word "wifi tethering", which means routing the wifi internet connection from your phone to a laptop. That would make no sense at all: if you have Wifi access to begin with, why route the WIfi connection through the phone instead of just connecting directly from your computer. Now when saying "3g tethering" your explanation makes sense...you don't have Wifi (or LAN) connection I you want to use your phone as a router. In summary, "Wifi tethering" is not the same as "3g tethering". No biggie ;)

I would think when most people use the term WiFi Tethering, they really mean 3G Tether as in receiving 3G Data to your phone, and using your phone as a wireless router to push this data to your devices; PC, Tablet, TV, etc.

Part of the confusion is from the name of the Wireless Tether app which is actually a 3G Tether app that works just like a mobile hot-spot. As previously mentioned, this is something you may not want to be using on a regular basis, but comes in handy when your dreaded Comcast Cable connect has one of it's moments and you need to access the internet via your laptop/desktop or you need to look something up where WiFi is not easily available.

As for actual WiFi Tethering, there's an app that does that too, adb Wireless. This would be more convenient for developers or when you don't have a micro-usb cable on hand to transfer between your phone and your PC.
