what's the difference between using the stock white boot screen (where i think ROMs have to be renamed PG05IMG.zip) and with Clock Work Mods black screen? I realize CWM requires root and gives a bit more flexibility and options, but is that about the only differences?

thank you!

White screen is called the hBoot screen... it's where you load Radio's named PG05IMG.zip, or RUU ROM's... it's NOT where you flash a normal custom ROM.

Recovery is the black screen... this is where you flash ROMs, Kernels, or any other custom Mod for the ROM you have loaded. And you can normally get to Recovery from the hBoot screen.

also to add on to Fatboy97's post, Recovery (the black screen) is where you can create nandroids (backups) and restore them too.
