Different methods for installing ClockworkMod Recovery?

So I've been reading up on installing ClockworkMod, and it's boiled down to two guides:
This and this
The AndroidCentral guide says I need to use Odin to flash back to stock JF6 Eclair and then install CWM from the stock recovery. However, the Cyanogenmod guide says I just need to use Heimdall if I'm already on 2.2 Froyo. If it helps, I have a new Captivate that came shipped with KB2 Froyo. Thanks :)

I'm just learning as well. I tried the method laid out by ls377, but it did not work. I was able to boot into clockworkmod, but the next time I booted up it was gone, so it didn't install it. I'll try the other method soon using heimdall or odin if I can figure it out.

I ended up using the command line heimdall method to install clockworkmod using the speedmod kernel. Soft bricked the phone once (not sure why, might have been because i had the cards in? dunno) and unbricked it with "one click unbrick." Once clockwork mod was on there, it was easy to download and install the CM7 rom. Pretty cool! Works great!

Odin and Heimdall are essentially the same thing, except Heimdall doesn't flash the whole package. You could also just install the kernel with Odin, and end up in the same place, or just edit the existing recovery and flash CWM over that. Different means, same result.

Or flash a kernel that replaces the stock recovery. I flashed Samurai kernel and it added Samurai recovery. Its basically a heavily themed cwm. Does same thing a cwm, just different color and bg image.
