Ok, I've played with the stock EVO long enough and feel its time for a root. I wanna be able to do a few things with the evo that i do believe i cant so until its rooted...

1. remove some junkware.
2. install apps like free wifi hotspot, ect
3. create back ups of installed apps and settings
4. install custom roms. 2.2 with sence some day.

i have been reading and see that there are a few different versions of root.

1. unrevoked
2. root your HTC Evo and install Clockwork recovery

i have see people complaining about clockwork recovery. is there another good recovery version besides clockwork? is this just for recovering the phone if something goes wrong, or is this for backing up apps and settings?

i have seen problems with unrevoked. i do believe you cant remove junkware with this version which sucks, but it is the easiest version. can you install custom roms with this type of root?

i do believe xda has even a few other types of roots. at least there are other types of tutorials to root. i have looked a little at ppcgeeks as well.

i would like to make android central my new forum and home for all my evo needs.

can you guys explain some of the pros and cons to these different types of roots.

can you guys post linky to your favorite root tutorials?

i have flashed a many ppc and blackberry devices, just new to this android thing. i have insurance and dont mind figuring out how to get out of trouble if the flash goes wrong. i would just like to learn it once and do it once the right way and not have to spend the whole week trying to fix it.

Thanks, Cody

Here's my method for full root, it's pretty simple if you just follow the steps exactly how they are listed

http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc...ewb-guide-how-root-recovery-roms-windows.html

and you can use Amons RA recovery, after you get rooted with Clockwork, download ROM Manager from the market and it will make you flash Clockwork but after, scroll all the way down and it will say Flash Alternate Recovery and you'll see Amons RA Recovery (my personal choice)

thanks, but... what exactly is recovery?

is it for recovering a bad flash or for backing up and restoring apps and settings?

Another noob here.

I too am ready to give root a try but I'm so overwhelmed with the various threads and types of rooting.

What's the best way to read up on the topic and start the process?

BTW, my EVO has the latest OTA update.

you're not.

@ cody: when dealing with root -- the recovery is the system that lets you flash roms, zips, do wipes, make backups, etc. all the maintenance to your system files if you will. amon's recovery just has more functions in it. probably more than you need at this point so i wouldn't recommend the extra step of switching to it. you can restore apps and user data using the OS with Titanium backup. donate to get the best user experience with it. well worth it.

ps
if you're new -- stay away from XDA until you have a better grasp of the process. those threads get long pretty quick and assistance can be difficult to get.

No, you can download Titanium Backup for the apps part, and spareparts for the settings once you root.

It's for flashing ROMs, radios, pretty much everything you find on here and XDA that's a .zip (more too, but since your a noob we'll stick with that)

^^^^ Totally agree with this dude... ^^^^

XDA can get long and confusing if your not in from the beginning...
Those guys can Talk and talk and talk... but it does have TONS of Info...

Thanks guys.

Although, I am a noob to android, I'm not a noob to the other platforms. Xda, ppcgeeks, treocentral, username codyppc. I respect the warnings and think it is very wise for those who are unsure to take baby step.

I have had bad flashes and what not, that is why I am being cautious. Android is unlike the other platforms. Lots of stuff needed to get er done. I will be going the amon recovery route because someday I will be doing the fancy stuff. While I'm learning how to use the tool, I want to be using the ones I'm going to keep.

I will be doing the donate versions because without these guys tools, it wouldn't be happening.

Thanks guys for all the replies. Android users on a lot of these forums forget that some of us are new to the platform. An "android ROM glossary" would be nice. Lol

please do not think i am flaming, but your double post made me chuckle.

Hehe, just noticed that. Posting from evo, while not prefect, is still better than most devices.

Rooting tonight, creating backups with spareparts and titanium. Don't know if I'm going custom Rom or not. So many of them and really haven't done enough research on which one is the best for me. One step at a time. Wish me luck.

24 hours later i'm cooking my own roms. i love this android platform.

wow, another double post from the evo above. must look into that later.

just wanted to thank you guys for your help again.

I rooted tonight and installed Clockwork. When I try to actually flash the clockworkmod recovery I get a message about an error occurring while attempting to run privileged commands. I assume that I need to fix this problem before doing anything else, right? Anyone else have this problem?
Yes, this is all very new to me.
