Disable battery optimization for GMail?

What's the consensus here on battery optimization and GMail? This is my first phone w/ Nougat/Oreo and my GMail push notifications definitely are slower and inconsistent...sometime they arrive after I "wake" the phone or screen....I'm all for battery life but I want my emails & texts to arrive immediately - for me this is communication device first and foremost.

After some searches, it appears Doze/battery optimization may be to blame.

Thoughts?

Battery optimization is enabled for GMail and I haven't had any issues with missing or inconsistent notifications.

I'm not sure what could be causing this. Does it happen on WiFi, cell data, both? Are there any options (like turn Wifi off when sleeping) that might be causing this?

Mine aren't missing, just sometimes very slow to arrive... Always when the phone is locked/screen off.

Not missing. Slow to arrive... This is how my co-workers would describe me.
