Disabled use of non-OEM batteries?!?

What's up with motorola disabling functionality for non-OEM batteries? They power the device fine, but you get a lame lil "?" In the battery meter and when plugging in a charger to the phone, an inconvenient message stating how it's not a motorola battery, so it won't charge it! (That's like hp locking/programming ink cartridges for single use)...

Any hacks available or is that something to look forward to in a custom rom?

How are you certain that Motorola has disabled anything?

Have you even thought that the cheap battery you purchased is exactly that...a cheap battery that does not meet the quality standard of an OEM? Sometimes you get what you pay for.

R u thick or what? Did you not read the original post? THERE IS CODE BUILT INTO THE ROM TO DETECT AND PURPOSELY NOT CHARGE A BATTERY THAT IS NOT FROM MOTOROLA. The non-oem battery is built to the same specs (mAh & voltage) and charges on an external charger and powers the device just fine. It is on the software side of the device to not display the percentage and to not charge while in the device. It actually pops up a message saying it will not charge a non motorola battery.
That being said, if you don't have anything intelligent to say or add to the topic, keep your ignorant comments to yourself, & certainly don't procreate...

Whoa. Settle down please!

If what you're saying is true (and I'm not saying it isn't..I have no idea) I can certainly understand the frustration. But there's no need to get so worked up.

Thanks :)

I can also confirm this. Third party batteries that worked in 2.1 no longer will charge on device on 2.2

Perhaps it's just a byproduct of the leaked 2.2 and will be fixed in the official release that's due out semi-soon?

Let's sincerely hope so. I was looking forward to the 3500mah Seidio battery :/

I want my maximum screen brightness all day long, don't judge me!!! :p

pyro, I didnt see it say anything in the first post about code changing? Also someone else said it worked in 2.1? Are you running 2.1 or 2.2?

Just trying to understand this better as I have an X on the way and have been looking at battery options

I bought some cheap batteries on eBay and they work fine in my X (2.1). The battery percentage was showing correctly and no error messages or question marks. If there is a change for 2.2, that will truly suck. Someone will have to do something about it.

Running 2.2 leak (rooted).

@ Natemz, thanks for the confirm.

Ya I thought the whole thing was a joke too. Was gonna wait to test with other roms, but already sent the bat back, since rom dev for this is still in it's infancy...

I just got Seidio's 1750mAh battery and its been working great in my X 2.1, i don't see the point of blocking other batteries. That is just greedy

you know I remember reading a lawsuit (or talk about one) against Microsoft when they were disabling the use of non OEM hard drives and memory cards on the Xbox and something about it being illegal, not sure what came of it or if it applies here but it does sound like the same thing
