Considering it could definitely have benefited from water resistance, stereo front facing speakers, micro SD card slot, wireless charging (maybe on the glass back) they kind of missed some good opportunities to make this phone really shine. And it really needs it considering its retailing for $650+ with phones that have more value for the same price. If they do have the best camera on a phone that'll be a standout feature but seems to me they didn't provide the best phone of the year.

There is not a phone in existence that has everything that you mentioned.

I agree that water resistance is a miss, but the rest I'm kinda meh about.

Actually there are. I'm pretty sure the old Xperia Z phones had everything I mentioned. Too bad they didn't have a more prominent presence in the US. But honestly having all of that is besides the point. What I'm really saying is that they are overpriced and don't seem to have anything unique or exciting to them to warrant $650+ over a $400 Honor 8. The Note 7 has much more value adds than the XL and the XL's final price is even higher. They made an overpriced phone for less features aka the iPhone.

The significant price increase just for a slightly larger screen is a con as well. If only the XiaoMi mi5 worked on Verizon

You may be right about the older Xperia. But it never had a great camera and software updates are not great.

The Honor 8....doesn't have a camera that can hang with the Pixel (from what we've seen). It doesn't have promised updates (I'm assuming the Pixel does even though I haven't seen it specifically). It doesn't have Assistant, and don't underestimate how much that's going to grow and get better over time.

The Honor 8 doesn't have seamless updates, the importance of which I think is not really understood.

I can't tell you if those things are worth the asking price for you, but your comparison to the iphone at least says that a crap load of people think that a phone that might lack a lot of "value adds" but does the things it does VERY well is worth it.

It's also a higher resolution display and has a larger battery than the regular Pixel.

It definitely doesn't check enough boxes for me to justify the price. Also Google would have to commit to 4 years of updates and I don't see that happening either. I would most miss wireless charging which is why I didn't buy a 6P but add in the price and other features I will be missing I may have watch for a deal on 6P instead. I know 5" is too small for me to comfortably type on, but XL would still be a downgrade from my Nexus 6 in screen size and I'm not sure I can deal with even 5.5". On the plus side, for now my N6 is feeling peppier with 7.0 and might just get me through to next year though I have seen some signs of the battery getting a bit weak after almost two years of solid use.

Well I don't know how serious Google is about hardware but they made some seriously obvious omissions.

1. Not having a MicroSD card slot is honestly no big deal, but they should have started with a 64GB option instead of 32GB if they wanted to go that route.

2. HTC made this phone, why couldn't they copy the stereo speaker setup from the HTC 10? I mean, Samsung doesn't have stereo speakers, but Samsung makes up for it by offering so much more.

3. Personal gripe, location of the fingerprint scanner is just stupid. Furthermore, I think all home buttons for any given user experience should be in the form of a tactile button (which may or may not double as a fingerprint sensor).

4. IP68 water resistance is honestly no big deal, would have been nice, but it's not a use case for most people. However given how pedestrian the rest of the phone is, you'd think this would be an extra they would toss in.

It's not exactly hard to come up with use cases that make sense, why can't they knock it out of the park? They have so many examples to learn from.

Yup, disappointed. For what it offers and lacks, I expected the phone to be priced similar to the Nexus 5X launch prices. $650 starting price for the 32GB Pixel seems ridiculous to me.

atkin_t, I agree with all your statements. There is nothing wrong with it, but nothing to justify a top of the market price either. I predict discounts before Christmas and steep discounts after, but that would be normal market for any flagship as the hardware prices come down and other competitors bring similar offerings.

The nexus one was $20 cheaper on contract than the iPhone. Nexus s was the same price as the iPhone on contract. The Galaxy nexus was a whopping $100 MORE than the iPhone on contract . the nexus 4 was the same price as the iPhone on contract. Nexus 6 was a whopping $100 MORE than the iPhone on contract. Pixel is the same price as the iPhone on contract. The pricing is in line at least contract wise.

Nexus 5 and 6p I don't think were offered on contract. And off contract pricing varied and yes the 6p was cheaper, but the off contract nexus 6 was the same price as the iPhone off contract.

These threads are cracking me up. People all say the same thing.

This is overpriced! Why would I buy this when I could buy *insert cheaply-made phone from small Chinese company*?

I'm pretty sure everyone is better off just buying a 6P then buying this phone. What I'm saying is there is no point in really buying this phone for this price. These days every phone is good. The $400 price range has very good competition. You can buy the OP3 and be pretty much set you don't need to purchase a Note 7 or S7 because it works flawlessly. So for Google to just make a phone with few value adds besides 24/7 customer support (that will probably be lackluster) and unlimited cloud storage (which is great but isn't worth $650) doesn't make sense. To me and other people they really did just make the iPhone for Android. I wasn't going to buy the phone anyway I have a S7e and its the best phone I've ever seen but I'm a concerned enthusiast.

We're obviously not talking about on contract... Most people buy the Nexus phones (and now Pixels) off contract... So that isn't even apart of the discussion.

The S7 isn't cheaply made. The Pixel XL is higher priced than the Note 7 and we all know that the Note 7 adds more value adds... There is no point of buying these phones when their competitors in the same price range adds more features and some have more features for less. These phones are clearly overpriced... Deal with it.

If they would've added any one of the features left out (wireless charging, water resistance, MicroSD slot) I would be more tempted to purchase, but as is, it doesn't make sense to me to buy it outright for 707 dollars after tax.

A big plus for me is not having Verizon bloat and quick updates from Google. That is HUGE for me. Almost worth the extra money.

Ok then...let's talk about off contract.Given that it has been known that Verizon Would be selling it for some time before launch, I was not in the least surprised at the pricing. It falls in line with the pricing of other nexii offered by Verizon like the Galaxy nexus and nexus 6,both starting around $650 off contract.

This isn't to say that I am not disappointed in pricing, because I was hoping for a good bang for the buck nexus or pixel too, just that I didn't expect any less for a device being sold by Verizon.
