Disconnecting Android Auto for 'charge only'

I sometimes do want to charge my phone without running Android Auto. I only want to use the apps that Android Auto does not support on my phone and charge my phone at the same time. But, whenever I connect my phone (Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Lollipop 5.1.1) to the Accord 2016 by using a USB cable, Android Auto automatically launches and can't use my phone for a different purpose other than Android Auto.

I do love Android Auto, but not always. I remember that there was 'charge only' mode in the USB connection mode on the developer menu on Android, however, it is no longer available (at least for Lollipop). So my solution right now is that I am using a separate USB charger using a cigarette socket and connect my phone here and this is a waste of the resources in the car (there are 2 USB ports already built-in!!)

So, I was wondering if there is way to get out of (or to stop) Android Auto once the phone is connected to the car by a USB cable so that I can use other apps while the phone is being charged.

Thanks.

I plug the USB into a charger in the power port.

Kalnel,

Thanks for your replay. BTW, what do you mean by 'a charger in the power port'? Are you using a separate USB charger like me to charge your phone? Or..

I have a LG G4 running Marshmallow but even before the update, I had the option from the quick pulldown menu to select charging only, MTP, PTP, etc.

If your phone just doesn't allow it, you can still use the quick switch button (recently used apps) to close out of Android Auto while the phone is still connected. At least I can on my G4.

I have a quick-charger that basically turns the power port into a USB port. You connect the phone using a USB cable.

Phenom,

That was a great idea. However, when I closed out of Android Auto, it came back again. I might keep trying to find the optimal solution. Thanks for your suggestion.

I have a quick-charger, too. My original intention was that I want to charge my phone using USB ports in the car not using any separate charger. Thanks.

Oh OK. Yeah, it pops up frequently. On my G4, if I hit the quick switch button and then the home button (instead of selecting one of the recent apps), it will take me to the phone's home screen and I can do whatever I want. However, if I hit the home button from any other screen, it will relaunch Android Auto. It can be annoying at first because you forget and keep launching AA. But in the two weeks I've had my Civic, I've trained my brain so that it's pretty much second nature now. Not sure if that workaround works on all phones though.

Thanks for sharing your tip. I might be too new for Android Auto and will train my brain, too. :)

If you have a 2016 Accord, I believe the USB port under the head unit is the only one that can be used for Android Auto. The one under the armrest should work as a charger but without launching Android Auto. Have you tried that?

gadgetfa,

You're absolutely right. I could use the USB port under the armrest as a 'charge only' port. The port under the armrest provides 1A of electric current and I wish it also gives 1.5A or higher amp to charge my device better.
