Display battle: iPhone4 vs EVO

I put my roommate's iPhone4 up to my EVO and the differences in clarity were minimal. I have perfect vision up close so I had both phones about 3 inches from my face and I could ever so slightly see pixelation on the EVO. iPhone4 was perfect. At 12 inches away from my face, I could not see any difference.

Doing some quick calculations, I found that the EVO has 216 ppi.

To me, as much as apple raved about it's new retina display, it's not that much better than other newer smartphones.

What have you guys found?

Dpi was never ther issue. Apple just brought it up with their hype. Nobody ever talked about it before.

True. You start filling people heads with numbers and instinctively they will clamor for the bigger one whether they notice the difference or not.

Hence the 600 Hz HDTVs for playback of 60 Hz signals. Yeah...

same here. I got my EVO before apple started talking about ppi and my first though with the EVO was, "WOW! this screen is huge and crisp!" now after the apple press conf, all the apple fanboys look down on screens like the EVO when in reality, HTC put a GREAT screen on it!

btw, there's a bigger difference from iphone 3g/3gs vs the evo than iphone4 vs evo. the iphone 3g/3gs is noticeably worse at 162 ppi.

I could care less about ppi though, like I started this reply with, my first impression of the evo was "great screen!".

Isn't the iPhone display still 1/3 smaller than ours? I pick up my iTouch now that I have my EVO and it seriously feels like a toy, it's so small and cute!

PPI does matter, and it's noticable but only if it's really low. The Evo's display is perfectly fine. High PPI on a screen like the Evo wouldn't do too much anyway.

Heh, not really fail if it works. That's the ultimate goal of marketing: get people to by something that they may not have any real reason to do so.

Ya, dpi is nice. But if someone was ever giving me any free HDTV on the market right now. I would not get the smallest 1080p tv I can find. I would get a 65" HDTV, heck maybe bigger.

Look everybody I have shown my evo to dropped there Jaws. They have seen the iPhone4's screen and could care less. Yes the screen is a lot better looking but the size of the evos screen makes EVERY single person I showed my evo to want one Really bad. I have a live wallpaper of a fish aquarium with bubbles on the screen, a moving toy box, and 10 diff fish. And every one was like, holy **** I Love this phone, then I double tap on the screen and the fish move to the top to be feed. And that makes them super impressed. The evos great looking colorful 4.3 screen make them all want one and not even wanna look at the iPhone4.

I have both phones now, and I would have to agree the EVO's screen size more than compensates for the iPhone's enhanced sharpness and clarity. I wasn't as wowed by the iPhone's screen as I thought I would be, and it doesn't fit very much information (e.g., emails) as the EVO does.

For anyone wondering, I'm only evaluating the iPhone, my heart remains loyal to Android for obvious reasons.

Nice! Please do some comparison photos, I'm still looking forward to still quality. The ones I've seen haven't been same distance/same lighting etc.

For me the size of the Evo's screen more than makes up for the lack of sharpness that the iPhone does have.

Granted, the iPhone has better pixel density than the Evo screen. However, the Evo's is larger, easier on the eyes and looks gorgeous despite the lower pixel count.

And did I mention I can make calls on my Evo without the need of the Steve Job's Sanctioned holding manuver.
