Displaying text message list

I have a 2022 GMC truck and it has no on board text app so I'm stuck with Android auto. The truck display for messages always says "no messages during this drive." is there any way to get Android Auto to populate a list of messages from my phone? I'd like to have a list of my messages displayed so I can select and reply to a past message. This is especially a problem with any group message. I can use the voice controls to send a message to a single recipient but messages to more than a single person is an issue. With the way AA functions I mostly have to deal with messages buy picking up my phone which I really don't want to do. Any suggestions?

I am pretty sure that Android Auto only populates with new messages. It is pretty much that they believe that scrolling on your screen is considered a distraction. You can't even scroll down half of your favorites when trying to navigate to a saved location in Waze. They expect you to use voice commands for things like that.

So I posted this a long time ago and the function of the message app remains the same. I never use the AA app with the exception of the maps. The other day I was on a map and I needed to make a call. Instead of returning to the truck's home screen and using the native phone app I just tapped the phone app in AA. We'll what do you know? Up pops a screen for the phone including a "recent" tab that conveniently displays recent incoming and outgoing calls for me to easily select. What's the difference? Why don't they have the same or similar screen for messaging? BTW I connected a friend's iPhone and carplay popped up all his recent messages. I don't get it. I'd use the app but the messaging is so bad I just don't. I'm so frustrated I'm considering buying an iPhone. $1200 or whatever is a lot cheaper than a new truck. Rant over. Does this exist for everyone or do people just deal with it, or not use it?

Reading your original post it sounds like you're just upset that it doesn't display anything and not that you need these other messages. But I see it's still bothering you.

I don't see anywhere you mention it but what phone do you have?

What messaging app are you using?

Have you tried other SMS apps?

I don't know why other than a privacy thing, that these messages wouldn't populate. I could be distraction but it could also be security. I'm imagining the same privacy issues that cause the camera to only display images taken while the screen was locked and not allowing access to all of your photos until unlocked. Maybe that would also work for your car issue. Have you tried unlocking the phone and even opening the SMS app while connected to the car?

Beyond that I would suggest trying a new SMS app. If you're using Google Messages try your manufacturer's SMS app or vice versa. It could be related to AA but it could also be related to the app you're using and this test would tell us a bit more. And more yet if you try 2 or 3 SMS apps to be sure of the result.
