DNA Massive Data Usage

My wife upgraded from an Incredible2 to a DNA last month. We pretty much immediately got a message saying she was hitting data use limits, which we chalked up to her doing a large amount of app and music downloads. This month she got another 3/4 of the way through the billing cycle. So, I looked at the data usage. Usually, she has slacker and pandora way over anything else. Now Android OS is almost double either of those. Something I've never seen. Any ideas?

Ask if she has background data disabled.

How do you check to see if the background data is disabled? Never mind I found it you can disable all but Android IOS.

Difference between 3G and 4G phone will make a lot of difference..

I'm about 20 days into my cycle and I'm at about 50mb for Android OS and I have background data enabled. How high is hers?

Not quite sure what you mean here? I've had 4G essentially since Verizon introduced it and have never had AndriodOS eating up my data plan.

She has had background data disabled for about 2 weeks now.

We're 8 days into our cycle now ... Jun 1 - 8. AndriodOS has used 142Mb on her DNA, my Galaxy Nexus has used 10.1Mb. We use a similar amount of total data usually. Cutting out that 130Mb, our numbers are otherwise close to the same. She has started using WiFi for her Pandora/Slacker, so now Facebook has risen to a distant second place on her phone. AndroidOS is her top use by a lot, a small sliver three pages down on my phone. This doesn't make sense to me.

I am saying that a 4G phone will use more data than a 3G phone..

Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled and connected whenever you can. When I was on unlimited I used on average 10GB - 14GB a month. But when I traded my RazrHD in for the DNA we had to go down to the shared plan and I moved our plan to 8GB a month. We only utilized 3GB the first month. Dramatic change when Wi-Fi is put into play. And everyone's usage is different. You may think it's similar but maybe she has taken lots of pictures and they are uploaded to Google or even multiple locations. If your cap is 2GB I would recommend bumping it up. And it doesn't sound like you are really using your Samsung that much by the data you posted. And Sense.... Get rid of that crap and install Nova on that DNA of hers. I don't use any of the phones Sense services.

Between 5/31 and today, Android OS has used 55.7 MB, but I think that's because I update all of my apps on 4G instead of WiFi. I'll only use WiFi to do that for the next week and see what the difference is. I only point this out because I think it might account for your wife's DNA's OS data usage.

If it's Sense, I'll have to deal with that. So far, the only plausible explanation (although it doesn't sound like anyone else has this problem). It's a nice phone, but using 800Mb a month for nothing is not going to be acceptable. Since "unlimited" became not, we are usually within 500M of our unlimited limit.

Where she works, there is no WiFi. So she is not going to be using WiFi during most of the time she is using the phone a lot. Not an option. Plus, we've been Android since the original Droid and this is the only phone that's done this. She does use WiFi at home and does all her app updates using it.

I talked to Verizon and they had me reset the phone. They don't think this is normal either.

It is not normal, mine is at 40MB about 2/3 through my billing cycle. I'd try re-setting the phone and if that doesn't work, getting a replacement from VZW.

I had a similar issue, but with Google maps. I was hovering around 6 gb 1/2 way through my cycle and then in 1 day I was at 19gb. I called Verizon and they were able to track the usage to the maps app. Thankfully I am still on the unlimited plan, but it was killing my battery. I did download the battery guru app and am having great luck keeping track of usage with it.

My billing cycle ends today and my DNA has used 1.01GB of data on Android OS. That's 25% of my 4GB allowance and 33% of the 3GB I used. Unacceptable.

The initial data warning was probably because of software updates when you first purchased the phone. I always do these on WiFi for our customers so they don't have that scare.
