The DI is not really outdated and its specs STILL hold up against all other phones currently out there, or have been announced. The Thunderbolt will be released this month, and it does have LTE, but its a huge phone. If the OP's friend doesn't need LTE or the huge screen, there is still nothing wrong with going with the DI.

Yes he should get a DINC....and while he's at it maybe he can pick up a dial up modem and an 8 track player.

Wait a couple weeks and get a 4g phone.
