since this phone is so cheap, I was thinking about buying it just for use on wifi and using google voice. I already have a sprint data line, but I would like to play around with Android. I'd mainly be using the phone for games/music/web browsing. However, if I can't use it without activating it, I don't want to buy it.
btw, I've heard that certain games such as Angry Birds is laggy. Is this a big issue with a lot of apps?

thanks for the reply :)
is there anything really cool to do with this phone? what roms should I look into? Is gingerbread a possibility?

gingerbread in the form of CM7 has been ported to the V, kind of. Theres a thread on here about CM7 and Zeifie's kernel. Try that. MMS doesnt work right but since you wont be using it as a phone, then that doesnt matter.

otherwise i really like my stock virgin mobile rom + zeifie's kernel (by revolutionRed) overclocked to 806hz. Angry birds works good, slight lag on level load but totally playable still.

Gingerbread is possible. I would recommend flashing Zefies kernel + cm7. Also, I have never experienced any lag with any game. My phone is over clocked and I assume everyone with lag issues probably has to many things going on at one time or maybe my phone is a better batch and goes that extra mile. That possibilities of entertainment are almost endless with an android.

I'm going to be honest: I have no idea what CM7 is. I am brand new to the world of Android

I bought it yesterday, but intend to activate it next month when my at&t contract ends. So, playing around now with wi-fi and I am loving every feature I am encountering. I understood calls via google voice uses (needs) minutes. But I did text and email with voice recog. Fantastic since typing is a little hard due to no hard keys. Getting used to swype but voice recog is better.

For apps, download anycut. Other apps I should have?

Currently, Gingerbread is not officially available on the Optimus V ("official" meaning through Virgin Mobile / LG). However, Gingerbread is open source, and people have compiled it after tweaking it to run on various devices.

CM7 (CyanogenMod 7) is a 3rd party modified version of Gingerbread. CM7 is also not officially available on the Optimus V ("official" meaning through CyanogenMod). However, CM7 is also open source, and people have compiled it after tweaking it to run on the Optimus V.

Currently, you can get CM7 running on the Optimus V from either Zefie's CM7 for the Optimus V, or from aospCMod for the LG Optimus V (In no particular order).

I just got the phone and I am having fun playing around with it. I'm going to root it and put gingerbread on it now

How are you using wifi? Did you activate the phone? My plan is also to simply use wifi etc and not activate the phone until I really need to. Also do I need to activate the phone to root it?

When the phone is turned on for the first time it goes straight to android and all the features are available to you (minus data, obv)
