Do I have to use a backup unlock method to use that FPS on the Nexus 5X?

I setup the fingerprint reader and you have to put a backup unlock system using that i chose pattern is there anyway to use the fingerprint without having to do this occasionally i dont use the fingerprint then i go to select something in notification part of the lock screen and have to enter in pattern so its a little annoying

You will need to have a fallback authentication method in case an issue happens where your fingerprint cannot be successfully read.

If you activate the lock screen and select a notification, you should still be able to use Imprint (fingerprint) to unlock the phone. (You should notice a fingerprint icon at the bottom center of the screen; indication fingerprint verification is available).

Check out some of the "Smart Unlock" options as well. You may be able to set it up so that it is more aware of your usage and slightly more reasonable in its responses.
