Do I have to use a specific kind of micro usb cable for my Galaxy S3?

The micro usb cable I have is for a cheap android smartphone. I tried charging a Galaxy S3 with it but it will not register. Does an S3 require a different kind of cable?

Welcome to Android Central! You don't need a special cable, but you do need a decent quality one. Cheap no-name cables are more likely to be defective, or they might be for data transfer only (or for charging only).
