Welcome to Android Central! In general, you don't need a mobile security app. It's still relatively difficult to get an actual virus on your device--you'd have to manually accept the installation of the malware. The malware might try to fool you into thinking the app is something legit, but there are usually red flags everywhere. Here are some general guidelines:

1. Avoid browsing shady sites like porn, gambling, "free" (aka pirated) music/app sites.
2. Never tap on links in popups.
3. Popups that warn you about security issues are virtually always bogus, and are just trying to trick you into installing an equally bogus (and probably malicious) "antivirus" app.
4. Turn on Google's Verify Apps feature, which allows Google to periodically scan your phone for any malware. Find it in the Google Settings app, under Security.
