Do I need a custom ROM if I want to install a kernel?

So I have rooted my Dinc, but I have no intention of losing any functionality by installing a custom ROM (I can't do tv out right if I am running CM?). What I would like to know, can I still install a custom kernel? I know there is a Kernel Manager (like ROM manager) app out there. I would like to install one for better battery life, but wasn't sure if I had to have a ROM installed too.

Thanks

You don't need a custom ROM to flash a kernel, just make sure you flash one that is intended for Sense ROM's.

There are lots of custom ROM's that have every bit of functionality as stock. Yes some of the more experimental or ported ROM's have bits and pieces that don't work but most of the Sense based ROM's work every bit and some much better than stock 2.2...Skyraider 4.0 for one, or Virtuous ROM come to mind. If you've rooted and made a nandroid backup then there isn't any ROM you can't try that, if you decide you don't like, you can always go back to your nandroid and just like that, your back to stock 2.2.

@Crump good looking out, I probably would've forgotten to check to see if it was for Sense or not.

As for ROM's, I actually like stock and haven't seen any other ones that I have really liked. I have a second Incredible that I test everything out on (doesn't work as a phone since I had reported it lost but later found it months after having it replaced).

Last up, anyone suggest any good Sense kernels?
