Do I need specifically set my USB settings on my HTC desire to connect the USB to my new car?

When the USB setting is on "Charge" I cannot connect the phone to my auto in order to use the Android Auto App.

Welcome to Android Central! Try turning on USB Debugging in the Developer Options. If you don't see Developer Options in your System Settings, then go to Settings>About Phone and tap Build Number 7 times.
