Do I need to get protection for the camera rings?

I have never got lens protectors for my phones but others do. And I have not had problems with scratches and tend to think that lens protectors might actually distort images. I do always have a case on my phones which prevent the camera's lenses from scraping against the table, etc.

I started using camera covers with my note 20 ultra. One day found lens cracked effected my pictures. Had it repaired and use camera covers now. The covers did not effect my pics on my note 20 ultra. I use them on my S22 ultra and my pictures come out fine. No issues.

I've never even considered them. I doubt if any of them are constructed in a way that doesn't affect photo quality. They aren't made to the same standards as filters for camera lenses.

My case keeps the lenses from touching the surface when my phone is placed lens side down. I've had my s22U since Feb 22 & there's not a scratch on any of the lenses.

My Husband has a case that offers less protection than my case & his s22U lenses are scratchless.

I agree with @Laura Knotek regarding the photo quality standards of these protectors.

Far from the standards for good camera protectors/filters. I normally paid, on average, over $150, for just a protective (UV/Skylight, 1A/1B) type filter, all were coated to prevent flare and won't even note costs for specific filters such as ND, POL, etc. And only filters from Hoya B+W are used.

These so-called protective filters are nothing other than plain glass.
Will they offer some protection, probably. However, looking at the teardown of the phones by the guy with the razor blade, he goes after lenses with that blade an no damage is done.

I prefer to case that keeps the lens away from damage. Something that keeps the lens about 1-2mm away from a table top.

My pixel 4XL has no scratches on the factory camera lens and has been in/out of my rear pocket, laid on a table more times than I can even count. And NO scratches.

However, to look at this subject honestly, people usually do not take their phone photos to blow up to 12x18 to sell and/or hang on a wall; the vast majority are sent via message, email, facebook, etc. to friends for their viewing or friends and relative are made to sit through a showing of a person's vacation/Kids/grandkids photos and movies using a cast feature to the TV. (Similar to the 60s/70s slide/8mm showings where people could not wait to run out the door screaming to the nearest bar.) So a cheap lens cover will not cause any problems other than adding possible flare.

And if people do not note a problem with their photos/movies while using lens covers; that's all that counts.

I've used my S22U a lot for two months with no case or protector of any kind. I cannot detect even micro-scratches anywhere, including the camera lenses and rings. But I have not dropped or banged the phone at all.

I used them on my N20U and my pics came out terrible. So no, not using it currently on my brand new S22U. Nice and crisp looking pics!

I use these types on both my iPhone 13 PM and my S22U. If they affect my photography on either phone in a negative way I can't see it as the photos on both phones are great IMO. It's peace of mind and to me, that peace of mind is well worth it. These phones are not low cost items from my perspective.

I agree. I am not rich. These phone are expensive.
I have had to replace my screen and screen over camera that was 360 dollars. I had in case. But falls and drops happen. It is a personal preference
I choose to use screen protector on front screen and on camera. Gives me piece of mind.

Also when I trade phone in the phones condition matters. I lost money last year on my trade in because it had a small crack

I do. I favor the Ultra series because it's a 5,000 mAh battery, but it's an expensive phone. And I'm not rich by any means. So I bought these from Amazon. They work great; no flares or anything else. Plus they look stylish against the phantom white phone! (As shown in the picture.)

If you're having a mental "Uhhh...how the f do these work?" moment like I was when these came, the black thing is only to line the silver protectors up. Once you put them over the camera lens, they look like the main photo. My dumb self originally thought the black thing stayed on. 🤦*♀️

For the record, I also use a case with a built-in screen protector since I'm a klutz who always drops my phone. Used to use a glass screen protector until I had one crack on me. Getting a sliver of glass stuck in my finger wasn't fun.

Rather than the individual protectors, I went with a protector that covers the whole area, mostly because they came in the box with my screen protectors. One good thing is that it levels out the lenses and it's easy to clean the entire area. However, a couple not so good 1) effectively raises the whole camera bump higher than my case's protective lip (do the individual ones do that too?)... 2) Eliminates the cool factor of the individual lenses.

I have only had it on for about two weeks and no scratches yet. So far, so good. I am using a very minimal case and I'm careful. We'll see how long it lasts. I will end up buying a set of individual ones at some point. I love the individual lenses.

Any good case should provide some lay on the table camera protection. That's usually good enough. But if your prone to dropping, then obviously get protector of some sought. There are even cases with a covering that slides closed when your not using the camera.
