do i need to root my android tv box?

Hi guys, I know this will have been answered many times, but I am unsure as to which files are need for my specific device, and I don't want to brick it.

I have an: Android TV box MXIII 4K with android 4.4.2 and It came rooted I think, but as it kept freezing I did a factory reset, and now I can install the programs I had on it before, and I'm assuming I need to root it again.

I would be really grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction? I have rooted other devices in the past such as my Vega tablet, so I have 'basic' proficiency

You only need to root it if you're running apps that need root. The ones that come with it don't.

If the kernel date is earlier than June 3, 2014, use Towel Root.
