Can I buy any type of usb-c to 3.5mm jack adapter or do I need one with a DAC chip converter?

It actually does depend on which device you have. Some use the internal DAC to feed audio to the USB connector, others just deed digital data to the USB connector and you need an adapter with a DAC. So join, then tell us which device you have.
