Do I really need a new phone? (Upgrade ponderings)

I am due for an upgrade soon and really love the idea of getting a Razr. But I keep wondering, do I really need a new phone? I have had zero problems with my X. It does all the things I want and need. It has been a powerhouse phone for me. Not really looking forward to updating to 621 (currently on 605)
I guess the only reason to upgrade would be 4g. My wife just got a stratosphere for her first smartphone maybe I'll play with her's and see if 4g really makes a difference. (BTW I am not getting the Strat. She wanted the physical keyboard)

How many of you out there are going to upgrade? What phone are you looking to upgrade to? Are you also thinking of sticking with the X?

Up until a couple of weeks ago, when I *finally* got brave enough to install a different ROM on my phone (after rooting it quite some time ago), I was ready to run over my Droid X with a car. Installing MIUI on my device transformed it--faster, smoother, prettier...even the Wi-Fi works better. Just goes to show you how awful Motorola's firmware is. I do intend to move to an iPhone at some point in the future, but that point is farther away than it was before.

I was in the Verizon store tonight checking out the Nexus. Big, beautiful, fast. 4G was very fast, over 11Mb/sec up and down on speedtest app.

For today online only you can get it $100 off.

Very tempting.

Yes, I was tempted, too, and I would have upgrade with the $100 off one-day sale, but Verizon wouldn't give me a break on my upgrade eligibility only 13 days away.

My DX is more stable now that it ever has been, updating to .621 was no problem, and I was able to retain root with the OTA Rootkeeper app. I'm still tormented now over the decision to get the Nexus in March, consider the Maxx, or just stay with the DX until December for the next Nexus release.

Any idea what manufacture will have the next nexus? The only thing stopping me from the Nexus is samsung- If nexus was a Moto phone I would be a little more wanting. So hard to decide. Hopefully prices drop this summer when my upgrade comes up, if not maybe I'll wait for the fourth of july sale.

I'm having the same issue, blaidth. My upgrade will be available tomorrow. I have spent way to much time researching the 4g phones the last couple weeks. I love my X and have had zero issues with the phone since launch day. I have my choices narrowed down to the Razr Maxx and the Nexus. I'm leaning towards the Maxx bcuz of the great experience I have had with the X.

Good luck in your search.

Glad to hear that you had such a lack of issues with your DX. I'm one day behind you, with my Verizon upgrade availability on Friday. I'm a bit tormented between just holding on to the DX until the next Nexus comes out, or upgrading on Friday, but I now think I will go with the Galaxy Nexus. I don't think you can go wrong with the Maxx either.

While I think the Maxx is better hardware, I really want to escape from the delays of manufacture and cell carrier layering for every update that comes along, and I want to be as free as possible from Verizon bloatware.

I only had one real problem with my DX that I could isolate to the hardware - a headphone connector that wouldn't hold the jack in place, so I had to have it replaced. There were their share of issues, though, but I think they were primary Firmware related. I never could get past the reboots every 3 to six days, especially when I used audio, or navigation. Both of the DX's acted pretty much the same.

My main concern right now is to be sure my unlimited data plan doesn't get altered to a tiered plan. I believe that is still possible, but I'm paranoid about someone changing it on me when I do the upgrade. I need to do more research on that - have you researched that, and come to a conclusion whether grandfathering your plan is still possible?

I just upgraded my Wife from her dumb multimedia phone that I had data on just in case- her upgrade to the 4G phone did not change our plan She has unlimitted data still.. So stick with the plan you got.
