Do modern phones have improved battery life over a couple years ago?

I have the galaxy s2 with a small provider that does not offer 4g, the price to go with ATT would be the same and I am thinking of switching even if I have to pay a early cancellation fee, the main reason is I want 4g, but also I want better battery life. In 7 hours of moderate use, or like 2-3 of doing something like playing a game off and on, it will go dead, unless I switch it off or do not touch it the whole day the battery will not last the whole day and usually dies when I need it most. Do the current offerings have a better batterylife? I am trying to make the decision to spend the money or not.

Battery on my Bionic seemed to be better than battery on the Thunderbolt.

It's hard to tell though since OEMs are putting higher capacity batteries year over year.
