Hey, All,

I have seen that some phones with notches allow you to black out the notch portion of the screen to get back to a 'normal' looking screen.

My question, about the Pixel 3XL, would be this : do the notch tabs actually use screen space that the app is using? Or is that space always above and beyond what the actual app screen shows? I was wondering if you could disable the notch altogether and still have all your apps appear normally.

For the most part, apps that are not in immersive mode aren't going to use that space anyways and it will be relegated to notifications/status icons. For apps that are in immersive mode, if the app is not using the new API targets to account for the notch, then there is the potential for the notch to cover some of the app content. This would basically be for games, as movies are typically letterboxing that space anyways because most videos are still 16:9 and with the 18:9, 18.5:9, 19:9 devices, approximately 10% of the display, 5% on each side, was going to be gray/black bars anyways.

The Pixel 3 XL, compared to the 2 XL is a net add of about 1/36 of the vertical display to content, because previously approx. 1/36 was being used to display notifications and status icons. Now that content is up on either side of the notch, and the pixels are available for app content. Which, because of dynamic configurations, means that things are just going to get slightly stretched.

You can't disable the notch as it's actual hardware with the screen built around it. Yes it'll interfere with certain apps such as YouTube when viewing videos. So you can watch the video with a chunk cut out of the side where the notch is, or you can pinch the screen so it's a smaller image and avoids the notch.

And as far as we know from people who have used the phone, there's no way to hide the notch with black bars around it like you can with other phones.

Most videos are not attempting to use that space unless you zoom in to remove the letterboxing that happens automatically on tall phones.

Notch or no notch.
I'm gonna have a Pixel 3 XL for a year.
I will have to get used to it.
Think the more I use it, the less attention I will pay to it.
And when I turn my phone sideways.
The less I will see it.

If you turn it upside down the notch wont be at the top anymore))

Having not used the device why do you dislike the notch? Most dudes hate skinny jeans till they see how it other guys look at them when they put em on. Do you have to have the pixel in your hand so much that you are willing to hate it just to say you have it?

This goes to everyone who is complaining about the notch. Not just this guy because I'm sick of seeing people complain about something. People did not like the taller aspect ratio on phones, but they got over it. Then did not like the missing headphone jack, but they got over it. They also do not like the physical keys on the keyboard going away, but they got over it. Then removable battery.

So I have to laugh at the idiocy. I love to watch people embrace what they despise. It's your money, if you are not 100% satisfied keep it in your purse.

If I let you have the link to this tweet does that mean that you're going to stop spreading misinformation?
