Apple finally admitted to doing that after a huge outcry from users, from rumors to 100% fact. Their reason was because a small amount of users experienced issues so they throttled down performance now people have slowed iPhones, still perfectly in good condition. Now when the next Samsung phone comes out, do you think Samsung will do the same to their phones? Pretty sure phones can last a decade with normal use (had an old blackberry still working after 10 years). What are your thoughts? Do you avoid updates? Should updates be avoided? Reason I brought it up because of the problems recently with the Note 4.

I don't believe so and after what apple did I don't think Samsung will do the same thing.

They all slow down over time. Accumulated data and cached data, more apps, etc.
We can wipe cache partition with Android which does help. Factory reset is a hardcore way of doing it...
Keeping the device clean and uncluttered with silly apps goes a long way to keep them zipping along.
Apple are certainly in the poo, this is going to cost them dearly!

Only thing about Samsung is the bloatware they bake in with their software that will eventually slow your phone. Just disable it and your phone will run fine. I have a note 4 with lollipop running smooth.

Samsung gives us the option of managing our own battery so I don’t think they will implement something similar.

since it is a note 4 it is probably out of warranty anyway so you can just root and install a good custom note 7 ROM, most of them are running really smooth

Bloatware?!?! I use the samsung apps and get rid of google bloatware, lol.

My BlackBerry 9700 still works perfectly, a 2010 device, as does my BlackBerry flip, a 2008 device. They haven't slowed down, but can't do a lot cos the app etc environment has changed so much.

But, those BlackBerry phones were made to last, they didn't have the degree of built in obsolescence considered smart by businesses generally today.

Not in my experience. I have been a Samsung user since the s27 and not experienced slow downs.

I recently had to go back to my S6 after smashing my screen, it didn't seem any slower than the last time I used it.

The issue with Apple was that the phone was designed to slow down as the battery aged. Apple claimed this was so the prior battery time could be better maintained, instead of the phone running out of juice quickly. Had people known that, they would have probably replaced the battery and the original performance would have been restored. Instead, this was kept a secret. So, most Apple owners, not knowing that a new battery would help their performance problem, just bought new phones. Now that the cat is out of the bag, many of people, who upgraded, feel they were forced to do so, and are rightfully angry.

Now the case with Samsung, so far, at least, is different. Many of the old Samsung phones did slow down with age, having nothing to do with the battery. Replacing the battery wouldn't help, although a factory reset frequently would.
I hope my N8 never slows down. So far, it has been great.

depends on ROM I guess, I never had much need for gps anyway, root itself shouldn't make a difference anyway
I know but it does. Maybe because you install Googe apps yourself? I don't know why but the rom doesn't seem to matter ime. GPS just not as good.

Never let a good dead go unpunished. Bad PR and marketing by Apple legal tams vs tech side? Look at how long the issue with Note 7 took to uncover why.

If it was a CPU, ARM or Intel, reaching thermal junction point you expect throttling.

If Samsung could have jumped in and throttled the Note 7 until they sorted it out safely - i think they would have.

iPhone users are quick to jump to a conspiracy. Software always puts heavier demands on resources. And yes, sell upgrades.

I had two 6S Plus phones. The first had poor battery but wasn't part of a known batch that we're 'defective.' The 2nd, bought a year later as Apple refurbished was excellent. And iOS 10 was a better fit than 9.2.x was.

So basically you're saying DON'T update your phone's OS? I wonder what would happen if you updated your Note 4?

The idea isn't about battery issues. It's more about forcing folks to think their phone is too old and slow. Actually the Note 4 specs still beat mid-range phones today.

So if you update with official OS, you're pretty much screwed? So is hacking the way of the future now?
