i am fairly new to the android world but am fairly good with computers. i am planning on buying a droid x and rooting it when my plan expires soon. i understand what rooting is and how to do that but i have a few questions concerning deodexing. one what is it and is it necessary to deodex my device if i have root access and want to use liberty or fission rom's and second what are themes is this just another word for custom roms? or is it altogether different? and if it is different is deodexing necessary? any help would be greatly appreciated.

In simple terms it's sort of like decompiling an Android application so is is easier for the files to be taken apart and changed. If you plan to install any custom roms then it is wise to Deodex but if you are not editing files then its not unnecessary.

that makes sense but i've read on other forums that some custom roms are already deodexed. is this true? or are only some of the custom roms deodexed and its just best to deodex. and also what are custom themes?

Some developers do have a habit to deodex with there roms... But you need to make sure that this is the case because if the rom requires the device deodex before installing and device isn't you may run into a bootloop.
